SOURCE: maytag gas dryer, no heat, ignitor wont glow

The machine will check all safety features first. check the overlimit by the burner. It may have a reset. If not, turn power off and check continuity (ohms). Good luck.

I have a Maytag MGD5800TW Gas Dryer. It does not heat up. What should I check?

First, Remove small plastic tab on front panel of dryer lower left corner. Start the dryer on regular cycle and observe what happens through hole. You need to know if ignitor glows orange. If you do not see the ignitor glow orange, replace the ignitor. If seeing full orange of the ignitor, do you hear a clicking and see the flame light?

Leave the dryer cycling while observing. When the dryer heats to temperature the flame will shut off. If the gas valve coils are bad the next thing to happen will be that the ignitor will glow orange again, the valve will click again but the flame won't light.

If the gas valve coils prove bad, based on the observations above, follow the procedure below to replace the coils. If NOT, come back with the results of your observations.

It's likely one of the coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The number for the coil kit, which will replace ALL the coils, for your machine is 279834.

Disconnect power and turn off gas before working on this dryer. Working on gas dryers is not recommended for people who are not professionals.

Disconnect Power. Remove lint filter. Remove two Phillips screws taking care NOT to allow them to fall into the blower housing. Place putty knife in the seam between the top and front panel about 2” in from either side. Push in on clip while pulling control panel forward and tilting putty knife handle up, all at the same time. Same on opposite side. Raise top all the way.

Looking down inside dryer on left and right see a 5/16” hex head screw about 6 inches down. Remove each side while holding front panel in place. Pull top of front panel about 3 inches forward from sides and then pull up. This will disengage the front panel from lower pressure clips and allow you to turn it sideways and expose the dryer interior. Take careful note of belt configuration BEFORE removing it. Draw a diagram of its travel.

Motor and idler pulley for dyer will be on right. Gas components will be on left. Replace All coils with Kit Number listed above. Take care not to touch or hit the ignitor or you will be replacing it also. It is VERY brittle.

Service on gas appliances should be undertaken by professionals only due to the danger of gas leakage which can cause fires or death by asphyxiation.

Reverse process to re-assemble.

The glow plug just lights up but no flame on my maytag mdg 5500aww

If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light check the flame sensor. If it is OK then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced.

Lights once then not again

Hot Surface ('Glow Bar') Ignition System glow-amin.60x20.gif (most common)
This is the most popular system currently in use and is comprised of a control mechanism (whether thermostat or electronic control), the oven ignitor and an oven gas valve. What happens in this style control system is that the thermostat or electronic control supplies power to the oven ignitor and gas valve which are connected in series (one after the other). As power flows through the ignitor it heats and allows a specific amount of current to flow to the oven valve which is in the same circuit. If the oven valve senses the proper current flow, it opens to allow gas to flow to the oven burner where the glowing hot ignitor (glow bar) ignites it.

My Maytag model # mdg6000bww doesn't heat up?

First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it) It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off. If the ignitor does not glow then it or the thermostat is bad. If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced. If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

How do you light pilot light?

Dryer does not have pilot light.  There is an ignitor that glows when the dryer is started and lights the flame when the gas begins to flow.  With the front of the dryer off start it up and look for the glow. when it glows hot enough (or on a newer model it might be a spark) the gas should ignite.  When the flame sensor sees that the gas is ignited it shuts off the ignitor and keeps the gas valve open until the temperature sensor gets high and shuts it off.  When the temp sensor cools down the cycle repeats.
If no glow or spark-->bad ignitor If no gas flow-->bad flame sensor or bad gas valve coil If gas comes on and goes off quickly-->lint filter and/or vent pipe or outlet may be clogged or bad flame sensor.
