Question about Optoma RD50 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

I turn on the tv but I get no picture (black screen). A sound starts when I turn on the tv. The sound ( like a humming noise) fan perhaps which goes up and down for about a minute then the tv shuts off and the lamp indicator goes on solid red. I have replaced the lamp. Prior to changing the lamp the tv would be shut off for an hour or two and when I return to the house to turn on the tv it would not come on. At times it would come on the next day.

I recently replaced my lamp.  The TV picture will not come on.   If I unplug the TV, and plug back in the TV will come on( sometimes, but not always).  There appears to be some type of "protective" circuit that is keeping the lamp from kicking on.

I am having the TV repaired next week.

Sounds like a problem with the color wheel. Unfortunately the color wheel is located inside the light engine. According to everything I have read, the only thing you can do is replace the light engine. You are better off replacing the TV. The light engines can run form $750 to $1400. Which is ridiculous!

Humming noise

There are only two moving parts in this set. The fans and the color wheel. Typically when the color wheel starts to break or go on the fritz, the tv stops working. Count your blessings you've still got the picture. Open the back and turn the tv on. The color wheel is located on the optics block tray. The fans are very visible with the back off. Stop the fan for a second and see if the sound goes away. If not, you might want to start looking around for a replacement color wheel. Rivervalleyelectronics.net is a good place to start. Sometimes Discountmerchant.com carries them too. Be aware that there two different wheels available. If the fan is the culprit of your problem. Radioshack will likely have a replacement for you. If you need further help, post a comment or email me and I'll send you pictures of what to look for. Cfoley@hawaii.rr.com
Good luck.

Samsung is notorious for having the motor on the color wheel burn out. If the color on the tv starts to fade or shift tones when the rev'ing or noise is happening then you'll know its the color wheel. There are only two moving parts in this set, the color wheel and the fans. If you're smelling something, it could be either. Take the back off the set and put a piece of tape on the lamp door switch and turn the set on. Try to pinpoint the source of the noise. If its a fan, no big deal, Radio shack should have a replacement. If it sounds like its comming from under the set, dig a little deeper and try unhooking the color wheel motor, not as easy as I am making it sound but either way the fan is about $20 to fix and the color wheel is about $100. Sure beats a $400 tech bill. If you get stuck, comment back and I'll send pictures of the dismantle.

Samsung DLP HLR5668W has mostly dark picture + grinding noise

Pix looks like a light pipe issue, inside the Light Engine. as far as the shutting down, could be a bad fan causing the grinding and when stopps the DMD turns the set off.
