Question about DeVilbiss Air Compressor Fan Ac-0108 Craftsman Portrcbl

Open Question

I have a Craftsman air compressor, model # 919.167320. This air compressor is currently having a recall on the shroud. They have been known to overheat, causing a fire. During the past several years I have replaced the fan several times due to breakage. The fan is easy to replace and only cost $7 so it isn't a real problem although I would like to know why they are breaking. It is used for personal use at home which mainly consist of airing up tires so it isn't used very often. Does anyone know what could be causing the fans to break?

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

Go to, search for your compressor by model number and you should be able to find a breakdown of your compressor. You can order parts from them if they are still available or use the part number for the capacitor to shop around on the web for prices.

I have a 3 gal/ 1HP Craftsman air comp. When I plug it in and turn it on, I get the sound of current getting to the motor but it does not start. A failed Starting capacitor?

Could be, do you have a capacitor checker? It sounds like you have a compressor locked up. Do you have oil in the compressor? If the compressor is new I would take it back and see if it is still under warranty. before I did any thing to it.....

Setting the max pressure on a Craftsman compressor

The pressure setting for on off of the compressor , and the operating pressure don't have to be the same. You should have two gauges. One for tank pressure, and one for operating pressure. Turn the large knob on the operating pressure, ccw to decrease and cw (clockwise) to increase. You can download a manual for your compressor at:

Converting from 220 to 110 volts

Most brands of air comperssors are built to work on either 220 or 110 v. I believe that 220 v compressors are more efficient and draw less current and run cooler.
The more expensive compressors have a switch allowing for voltage selection. Still others will have a wiring diagram printed on the motor allowing voltage change by changing jumpers. Most all of the sears compressors that I have repaired were of single voltage with no other way to change except change motor. Do not worry however, you have the better motor. It is easier to convert the outlet plug to 220 by isolating the circuit and installing a 220 v breaker. enjoy
