On the belt end, there is a clip #59 to remove then you can take the brush roll apart, replace the brush strips and put it back together.

The brush motor seems to be jammed with hair, I can't figure out how to clean it out. Can it be disassembled and cleaned?

depends onn make and model of vacuum. Most brushes are belt driven and not linked to a motor. For hair around the brush bristles carefully cut along the length of the brush roller taking care not to cut any of the bristles, then pull them off. Some makes have a releasable base to make this easier, these have several large plastic screws that turn with a coin. Hope this helps

Already replaced filters. Suction is fine. Only have short nap rugs. Is not picking up hair, thread small things on the carpets. I have cleaned the bristles on bottom as well.

Turn the vacuum over with the bristles up. Turn on the vacuum and see if the bristles are turning. If not, then replace the belt that makes the bristles spin.

Model 169, type J, I disassembled the brush roller to clean it. it had hair and yuck wrapped all over it. Can you help?

Removal and disposal of hair and yuck is up to you, the user but you are on your way to a solution. Once all h&y has been removed, and you have cleaned out inside the end caps as well the rejuvenated brush roller should spin like new (unless the bristles are worn, in which case replacement of the complete brush roller will be necessary).

When do you replace the brush on a vacuum cleaner

Replace when the bristles are worn or frayed or if they are not stiff. To check the length of the bristles, make sure your vacuum is unplugged, lay it upside down and lay a card or straight edge across the bottom plate to see how much bristle sticks out. If it's even the the bottom plate it's time to replace it.

How can I get the brush roller to work

HI, it's Jim from Crucial Vacuum!

First things first, unplug your vacuum and turn it over. Check your brush roll for any large amount of debris. This usually comes in the form of carpet fibers, or hair strands wrapped around the brush roll. Try manually rotating the brush roll, this will help unclog any hidden debris.

Take off your vacuums bottom plate, this is usually held on by two screws on opposing sides of the bottom of your vacuum. Remove the brush roll and examine the belt to see if it is applying tension to the brush roll. If the belt is loose this would cause the brush roll to not work properly.

What's the quality of the bristles on the roll? If they look worn down, or loose then it's time to replace the brush roll itself.

Brush won't spin on hoover wind tunnel bag less upright when on carpet, belts are fine

The belts may look fine but may be stretched and worn. Replace them. Make sure brush spins free. Idler pulley should tighten belt tension when handle is released

Dyson DC18 All-floor Vacuum bristles won't turn

Hello, this is Ava with Think Crucial.

There are a number of reasons why your brush roller has stopped moving. General maintenance to your vacuum is crucial and will help it work at peak performance.

First things first lets focus on the brush roller. Unplug the vacuum and turn it on its side. Look for any noticeable clumps of debris or hair strands that may be caught in the brush roller. Remove these obstructions, probably best to do so with a scissor if it's hair or long pieces of carpet fibers. After removing the debris try manually rotating the brush roller to uncover other hidden clogs. Another thing to take note of is the condition of the bristles on the roll itself. Are they loose or worn down? These are signs that your brush roller is in need of replacing.

While checking out your brush roll you might as well take a look at your vacuums belt. Your belt should be replaced about every three months. After regular usage, the belt will stretch out, lessening the tension on the brush roller. Lesser tension diminishes the brush roller's turn rate and speed. If the belt feels loose then it certainly is affecting your vacuums suction as well as your brush roll not moving at all.

My Dyson DC25 suddenly had a small blue spark near the bristle section and now the bristles won't work. Hoover works but bristles won't turn. Any suggestions how I can fix it? Thanks

Hi Michelle,

I would suggest contacting Dyson right away and see if they will cover it under their warranty.

Also, I found their support site helpful as well. You will need the first 3-digits of your serial number (usually found behind the removable canister).

Bristles quit rotating and smelled like something was burning. It isn't the belt that turns the bristles. Can't afford a repairman, can you help me fix it?

Belt can reamin intact but still jam and burn. It won't necessarily break. I suggest you remove the bottom of the vacuum where the bristles spins and where the belt is located. You may have something jammed in there. You may need to remove the bristle to get the belt out. Inspect the belt and replace after clearing the obstruiction.

Need to replace belt and cannot figure how to take it apart to get at the belt --- Took Screws off on the bottom but could not get to the belt

You have already removed the screws so lift the brush cover off. Then grasp rotating floor brush at both ends and lift. Clean strings, hair and other debris from rotating brush, paying close attention to the brush ends. Clean the debris from motor pulley and drive belt areas.Grasp old drive belt and remove from motor pulley. Place new drive belt over motor pulley and stretch other end over rotating floor brush in the space between the bristles. Place the ends of the rotating floor brush down into slots on the sides. Turn the rotating floor brush by hand several times in the direction of motor pulley. If installed properly, drive belt will center itself on rotating brush. Reposition brush cover and screw back into place. I hope that this helps you!
