Running poorly with oily plugs

Hi can anyone help me i have a Briggs & Stratton 18hp vanguard v twin that keeps oiling up its plugs and runs but not well with a lack of power. on removing the carburetor and cleaning it, i still have the problem. but when i looked into both of the intake manafolds one seemed normal but the other one was rusty coloured and seemed very dirty, can anyone tell me what could be causing these problems?

SOURCE: Need carburetor adjustment

I had a similar problem with my 23 hp briggs. While cleaning the carb I found that the great gas we get today had eaten the seal around one of the jets in the throttle body causing it to fall out. Replaced the jet and now runs like a champ. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Engine starts but won't stay running

an easy way to know that is to start engine and give it a shot of starting fluid ,if you can keep it running by this method I would replace diaphragm.

SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton 20hp twin cylinder runs only with full choke

Had one on my saw mill had this problem as well Try pulling bowl off bottom of carby as the float can get **** with old fuel especially ethanol fuels as they attract water bowl is normally held on with one center screw on bottom of carby. Note always turn fuel off and let engine run out of fuel as this stops goop from building up in carby

SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly

First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms

Spark plugs foul immediately

Fouled plugs may be caused by oil leaking into the cylinder. Does it smoke when running (cold), are you using up the crank oil. Black smoke is excess gas comsumption, blue smoke is oil burning. If your plug is fouled with black carbon, you are most likely running to rich.

I have a B & S vanguard 20 H.P. vert. shaft, 8 years old on Simplicty tractor. Keeps fouling plugs. Clean or replace plugs and it runs fine for about 1/2 an hour then starts to miss, blacksmoke, and...

Anti-foul plug adapters might be a temporary solution (treats the symptom and not the cause).
Personally, I would take it to a good, reputable, small engine repair shop that has verifiable references, and have them repair it.

Briggs and Stratton Vanguard twin stopping running and wont start

A couple of things you might try...off the shelf from Lowe's or walmart is engine repair in a bottle...I've used it and it works, but read instructions. If that doesn't work, you may have a lacquer build up on carb. Pull the fuel bowl off carefully and check for a clear opening in the fuel pickup as they may be clogged. Remove gas tank and flush it and then make sure it's really dry...replace fuel filter and install two in series in place of one. Also, try to find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas and use it for your small engines. Hope this helps some.

Oil in air breather

sounds like you have too much oil in the engine (should normally be around 500-600ml when there is too much oil, it gets past the piston rings and pushes it through to the head.
