My TI 84+ also turns on but no keys work, it won't turn off and it types in calculations on it's own. If you have any suggestions or solutions please help, I need my calculator for university this year.

I am having the same problem with the Ti-84 Silver Edition. Mine is 15 months old and I received a message to replace the batteries. After replacing them the calculator has not worked. I talked with Texas Instruments and was unable to correct the problem. It will not power off, or perform functions. I questioned them about how common or frequently this occurs on the Ti-84. I was told to compare it to a car part. Some may last for years while others don't last as long. I'm beginning to wonder how frequently this problem occurs when the batteries need replacing. If anyone has a solution it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone,
I just had the same problem with my calculator. Only the On button worked, but nothing else. So I plugged in my calculator to my computer and I reinstalled the latest OS (2.43 I think). That didn't do anything, so I reinstalled OS version 2.22, a very old one. That made my calculator work! I think there is a problem with the 2.43 OS. I haven't tried upgrading my calculator any higher than 2.22. I'm sure 2.30 could work. Good luck. If anyone needs help in installing a new OS, I can help you.

I had the exact same problem, but mine happened because i spilled coke on it. what i did is that i took it apart carefully and cleaned up all the sticky dry coke that was on the inside part. i had to unscrew some kind of film and clean it up. put it back together and now it works perfect, i dont know if that is your problem but it worked for me

Won't turn on

hi cbonge,

A battery reset procedure should bring your Ti 84 Plus back to life.

Make sure the batteries are in correctly? The batteries alternate negative/positive, positive/ negative and so on. The first time I put the batteries in, I didn't have them in correctly. I know if it happen to me that anybody could make the same mistake. And of course, the calculator will never come on if the batteries aren't in correctly.

The process below should reset your calculator.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

1). Pressing the [2nd] key followed by pressing and releasing the [Up Arrow] key. This adjust the contrast in case the contrast was to low. Keep repeating if necessary for about 10 seconds and, then go to the next step. If calculator comes on and responds to key functions your done.

2). Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR],
reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the
message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message. If calculator starts responding to key functions your done.

3). Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display
"Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the
TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system.

4). Steps to re-installing the operating system:
~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.

5). Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

6). If the above process did not work. Try re-doing the procedure and, extend the time in step 4, by 5 minutes to 10 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator. These calculators can be a little stubborn at times so, keep trying and follow the procedures.

TI-84 Plus Silver Edt...unable to power up

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If that doesn't work, try a hard reset. Remove one of the four AAA batteries. Press and hold the ON key. While holding down the ON key, replace the battery.

Ti-84 problem!

Could be that your calculator needs to be reset. Take out the internal battery that is located in a tiny door with a screw right above the 4 AAA batteries. Leave this out for about 8 hours and put it back in. Put in the AAA batteries and the calculator will be reset and may work.
