There are a few questions about this so i go to the easiest.

If your router had multiple "Lan" ports you can connect an extra cable to the router and your laptop. You leave your working internet on your computer intact.

If your router has DHCP (which give you an ip adress when you connect a cable to the pc and router) you can use internet right away unless your provider doesn't allow you to have multiple internet connections or if they installed your router as a "modem" function.

If your router does not have DHCP and has "fixed" adresses you need to type in the adresses in your network configuration of your network card from your laptop.

You can copy the adresses from your own pc by going to Start - Run and type CMD or Command. it gives you a dos-box. Then type ipconfig and it gives you a screen like

ip-adress 192.168.1.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
dns 192.168.1.254

This screen let you also know if you have DHCP. It will also say if you have DHCP > "Assigned by DHCP" server and it shows a dhcp adress. usually the same adress as your DNS. Only if you have DHCP.

You can type the subnet and dns directly over but the ip-adress needs to be unique. So type in 192.168.1.10 for example. The important thing is to leave the first 3 digits the same.

sometimes it start with 10.0.0.1 depends on the router.
then type first 10.0.0. 2 or higher but not higher then 253 if your router adress is 254.

Good luck.

If your laptop has a wireless card built in - or external, you will be able to get the wireless signal.  You need to open your wireless dialog - Start > My Network Places > View Network Places

I would suggest getting a wireless router. one that supports the security on your laptop wireless card...then you can still hook up wired on the desktop and you can set up the wireless security and connect wireless to your laptop.

If you're Bell sympatico is a wireless modem/router and your laptop has built in wireless on it you just need to connect to the wireless signal of the Bell sympatico then that should be the time you can access internet with the laptop, But if your Bell sympatico is only a plain DSL modem you need to get a wireless router that will share the internet to your laptop and desktop so you can roam in your house with your laptop here is a sample of wireless router Linksys WRT54G.

Hope that helps........

Linksys router will not work with my hp deskto

you will need to "set up" the router.
http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support
This is the support page for linksys, if you enter your model in the drop down box, you may see a "Easy Setup' or "assistant" software to help set it up, otherwise you can contact your ISP and they will walk you through entering the right settings.
You will usually have to enter 192.168.1.0, or something close in the address bar when you hook your router up and get pagecannot be displayed, type in that number (or the correct ip of the router) and it will get you to the router setup page.

Wireless connection set up

Are you trying to hook up the laptop wirelessly to the pc? because then the pc would need to have a wireless card as well....sounds like I need more info, but if you are trying to do what I think you are, you should just get a wireless router instead, hook the pc tower directly to it via ethernet cable, and then setup the laptop to connect to the router. The router would hook to your dsl or cable router....what service do you have?

How to install a linksys router to my desk top for my wireless laptop

1. plug in the router
2. connect the router to your DSL or Cable Modem using the supplied ethernet cable
3. connect the router to your computers ehternet port with a second piece of ethernet cable

you can use catagory 5 ethernet cable , or catagory 6

Most linksys routers have 4 to 5 ethernet ports to connect computers to.

One of the ports will be marked as the one to connect to your DSL or Cable Modem

Usually when looking at the back of the router the WAN port will be located to the far left.

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

I just bought a laptop and we recently got a DSL connection, I'm not sure how to connect my laptop wirelessly ( Do I need anything else?).

If you would like to connect wirelessly to your DSL connection you will need a wireless router if your modem is not a combination modem/wireless router (You can ask your ISP regarding this). You may go to
www.linksys.com and www.netgear.com so that you may look at routers that will suit your needs.

Try resetting your IP address:
The laptop may be trying to use the IP address from the old router.

1) Click Start (assuming Windows 2000, XP, or Vista)
2) Click Run
3) Type in CMD
This will take you to a black command box
4) Type in: ipconfig/release
The chart should show your IP address as 0.0.0.0
Once this has happened, proceed to step 5
5) Type in: ipconfig/renew
You should now see a new IP address listed.

Also note that you need to set up your network key (assuming that you are using one) on both the router and laptop.
Make sure that your router is set up to perform as DHCP server.

I have a DSL router provided by frontier. I am trying to make my desktop wireless. I believe that my DSL router functions as a modem also. I purchased a Linksys wireless broadband router. I can't not...

Your router should just be that, a router. Your connection is probably like fibernet the modem is actually on the outside of the house. This may help or may not but I have a linksys wired router that works very well but you have to go to their website in order to set up the router. You may need to look through your papers and find the web address to connect to the right site.
