The hinge should be to the north. An imaginary line drawn perpendicular from the center of the tilt plate should point to Polaris (the North Star).

It can be cleaned, but I would recommend you see if there is a local astronomy club, whose members can help.

Do you have a fresh set of batteries in the scope? Better to use an outside 12 volt power pack with the Celestron 12 volt "cigarette" lighter cable.

This can be three things:

Low power

Bad cable from hand controller to scope.

Or a broken hand controller

Try fresh batteries first.

SOURCE: The Celestron Nexstar 4SE makes a weird cracking

Is the AZimuth clutch locked down? Then either a gear is broken inside or the worm gear inside has slipped and is not engaing. You can return these to Celestron for repair, here:

New out of the box, our Celestron Nexstar 4se does not ask for our location. Cannot find it anywhere in the controls to input, therefore it will not align.

RESET the hand controller-- then turn it off-- wait 15 seconds and turn it back on. If this does not fix it the firmware will need to be reloaded. You will need a special cable from Celestron to update the firmware.

I would simply return the scope and get another one-- if the scope is new.

Problem viewing planets using 25mm eye piece. which eye piece works the best? nextstar 80 slt

The smaller the number on the eyepiece the greater the magnification-- the maximum magnification of any telescope is about 50 times aperture. You scope is about 3 inches -- so 150 power is the maximum usable magnification.

BUT-- only under perfect conditions -- perfect sky-- perfect optics -- perfect eyepieces. Usually 30-40 times aperture is all you will get on a typical night with some turbulence in the atmosphere.

Sound like a gear inside is either broken or the worm gear is locked up. Celestron can repair this if you call them here:

I have a celestron 4se and with the cn-16 gps! i still cannot align the telescope!

Tripod must be level, scope must be in the home position. There is a drive training session described in the manual which you MUST do. Time, Date, and SITE, must all be correct.

Do a two star alignment after the above.
