Question about Mac Desktops

OS9 icons change on OS10

Why? When transferring files from a Mac using OS9 to a Mac using OS10, the icons change appearance and the file info changes too. That is, a Quark document is identified as Unix, Illustrator eps becomes generic, etc.

Your first response put me at ease. I thought the problem was something quirky only with my computers. I have many aged graphic programs on an aged OS9 computer that I cannot yet afford to upgrade to the newer computer (OS10.4, Intel). Only Quark 7.3 and a now out-of-date trial of Creative Suite 3 is on the new device. I had been able to open Illustrator and Photoshop with the trial version. Also, Quark did open the older generic icon files (4.1) in a round about way. But strangely, after many months, the 4.1 icons on CDs now look the same on both OS9 and OS10.4 computers. Quirky computer actions defy explanation.
Anyway, thanks for your input. It helped.

I had the same thing happen when I switched from os9 to osx. I had to install the programs, Quark, Illustrator, etc. then the icons appearance was normal. You may also have to actually open the program, then open the files themselves before the icons show as normal.

Hope this helps.

I have just purchased an external hard drive for my mac as it is now full. its a toshiba store.e canvio. i have just transferred a movie from iTunes to the drive but it will not play and says file is

This may be a permissions problem. In finder, click on the file, then go to File:Get Info (or type <command>-i). In the file info window, look for "Sharing and permissions." Click on the triangle to expand. Look for a padlock icon, then click on it and type in your administrator password when it is requested. Now you can change permission from "No access" to "Read Only" or "Read and Write."

If this is not available, you've run afoul of iTunes copy protection, or iTunes is not set to look there for files. In the first case, you'll have to work from inside iTunes to get a viable copy onto the external drive, perhaps as a backup copy. In the second case, you would open Preferences in the iTunes menu, then click the Advanced tab to get to the iTunes media folder location dialog. (Make sure the external drive is connected before opening Preferences.) Click "Change..." and browse to the proper folder on the external hard drive. You will have to change back to the original location if the external drive is not connected, so first copy the original location path name and paste it on a Stickies note. After you set the external location, do the same with that path name. Then instead of having to navigate to file locations every time you change, you can just copy the path from the Stickies note and paste it into the location box.
The preceding paragraph was written for iTunes 10.6.3. Your version may differ somewhat.

How to install new google desk top icon on mac

Pretty easy, but might require you do things you haven't done before...

  1. Visit Google.com or whichever Google you'd like as a desktop shortcut
  2. In the Address Bar/Search Bar at the top of the window, drag the Google icon to your desktop. This will create a Google-named generic icon on the desktop
  3. Do a Google image search for a .PNG file of whatever Google logo you'd like. I've provided a link for the Google Drive logo below.
  4. Once you've found one you like, click on it and it'll bring up a preview window. You'll be able to tell if it's a transparent icon (very critical) because you'll see a checkerboard pattern behind the logo.
  5. Click on the View Image button. It'll bring up the logo in it's own window.
  6. Click anywhere in the window and type COMMAND+A to select the image.
  7. Type COMMAND+C to copy the image
  8. Click on the generic document icon named Google on your desktop and type COMMAND+I. This brings up the Get Info window for the file.
  9. Click on the small file icon at the top left of the window. It'll be surrounded by a light blue "halo" showing that it's selected
  10. Type COMMAND+V to paste the image file. You'll see that the generic icons in the window are now changed to the Google logo.
If you choose the wrong file type and paste it in, don't worry... just undo your last action (COMMAND+Z) and all will be well!

I hope this info helps!

Have apple eMac forgot user password can you help

You need to start up from the system cd for the eMac then use 'Password Utility' to change the password.
Alternatively, if you are transferring the files to another Mac, you can start up the eMac in 'Target Disk' mode by holding down the 'T' key during start-up until a Firewire symbol appears on the screen. The computer can then be connected to another Mac which will see the eMac as an external HD.

The desktop files on my mac G5 won't open when I double click. My son was recently using it and I don't know if he reset or changed settings that would cause this.

One of 2 things...

One, the app used to open the files is missing or not found.
Two, the extension was removed from the file.

Try holding the Option Key while dragging the file on top the application's icon. This will force it to open.

When i turn it on it's saying there's no such file directory. It's a dual core processor I tried to switch it from Os9 to Os10 and now it's got a black screen with this on it

Try starting from CD and check hard drive. Sounds like you installed something that may have corrupted something on your hard drive.

Why "print and fax" icon disappearing from my mac "system preferences" window ? Right now instead of showing "system preferences icon!"(name didn't change! only the icon). So i can't add new printer, even...

Hello, it seems like your system has a corrupted preference file, or something has been deleted. For best results, I would recommend to do an update of your system. If this doesn't work, you can try to repair the systems permissions in Applications --> utilities --> disk utility, and hit "SOS" and select your drive then click on "repair permissions". Reboot the computer.
If this doesnt help, I would recommend to reinstall the system using the Leopard DVD

Is it a file or Folder on the screen?
Are you booting in OS9 or OSX?

Simple answer without knowing the answer to the above questions could be the hard drive is bad. Try rebooting with the install cd's that came with the machine. If you see a disk image it is good if not it is bad. If in Os9 it is a corrupted system folder and that could mean many issues have occurred.
