Not really. Dog id tags come in many different shapes (hearts, circles, dog bones, customized shapes), but as long as they are made of high quality materials and the information on them can be read easily, they are fine regardless of their shape.

I'm going to buy my dog an id tag and I want to make sure it is durable. Any recommendations on what material it should be?

The most durable dog id tag will be the stainless steel one. If you want something a little cheaper, you can still go with metal or thick plastic. Just make sure it's one of these three and not some low quality tag that will wear off in a short time.

What information should I write on my dog's id tag?

I have heard it said you should not write the dog's name on it as if the person who finds the dog will know its name. If you don't put the name you have a better chance of proving the dog is yours if someone decides to keep it.(Dogs are intelligent and learn their names and how you say them) You SHOULD however put your cell number (or landline number if you are not planning on changing it) This way someone who finds your loved pet can contact you and arrange for you to collect him/her. You could have engraved on the reverse something like -
"Reward paid for return"
Hope that helps.

What factors do I need to consider in choosing an ID tag for my dog?

Most importantly you will want to look for something durable - stainless steel is the longest lasting material. Next pick out a shape and color; preferably something that will not blend into the color of your dogs coat. Decide what information to put on the ID tag; ensuring it is legible and concise.

Why does my dog need an ID tag?

There are many reasons why pets need ID tags. First, it is illegal in most states in the USto not have one. If your dog gets lostor hurt, the tag is the only way to return him to you. If your dog gets lost and has a medicalproblem, the tag can identify the issue. If your dog injures someone or another dog while not under your watch, you can be located via the information on the ID tag.
