HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKING CHAIR CUSHIONS

If your rocking chair cushions are looking weary and old, you don't need to buy a new rocking chair. If you can sew, follow these simple tips and re-upholster your existing cushions or make new ones altogether. Your friends will be congratulating you on your brand new rocking chair.

1. Draw a design for your rocking chair cushion. If you are new to this, keep it simple with a rectangle or square design.

2.
Measure the area for the cushion, taking both length and width and then add 3 cms to each, and this will be the amount of fabric you need.

3. When you buy or cut out the cushion padding, use the original measurements ie without the extra 3cm you added on to the material.

4. Your padding material should be between 1 and 1 and a quarter inches thick.

5. Now cut out your cushion fabric. You need 2 pieces for each cushion. Make sure you keep the lines straight and that they are both exactly the same .

6.
Start at a corner and sew a piping (double seam) along the edge. Then sew the 2 connecting sides to that new seam and this should form a pocket that is connected on 3 sides but has an open top.

7.
Now stuff the cushion. Don't rush this part. Make sure none of the foam is folded over or squashed up inside the cover.

8. Now sew the final seam together. It can be a bit tricky so make sure it's lined up properly.

9.
Once you've finished the basic cushion you can always add extra details such as trimming or tassles.

Enjoy!

How to Choose a Rocking Chair?

Some people think that rocking chairs are just the traditional wooden chair used to either nurse a baby or for sitting on the porch watching the sunset, but rocking chairs can be a great addition to a kid's room or part of lounge furniture.
Nowadays rocking chairs don't just come in plain wood designs. There are different colors and styles, chairs made from plastic or wicker and even especially ergonomically designed ones. Here are some tips to help you pick the type of chair that is right for you:
1. Decide what kind of motion you are going for. Chairs can either move back and forth or side to side (known as gliders). The back and forth chairs take up more space but give a smoother motion.
2. Choose the kind of material that you want your chair to be made from. Traditional rocking chairs are made from wood but you can also get in metal and plastic. If you want an outdoor chair, bear it in mind when deciding on your material choice.
3. Some rocking chairs come with cushions, others you have to buy separately. When they are attached they don't move around or fall off, but can't be cleaned as easily. Also removable cushions give you the option of choosing colors and patterns and changing your mind as time goes on.
4. Finally decide what your budget is. Rocking chairs can be bought for as little as under $100 for a very basic wooden design and cost up to several thousand dollars for hand crafted and exotic woods. Pick a budget range and stick to it.

What materials are old rocking chairs made of?

Old rocking chairs are usually made of hardwood such as oak, while others are made of softwood (ex. Pine). The reason for this is that soft wood has a hard time to hold up the stress.

How to choose a rocking chair for your baby nursery

It might seem like an old fashioned piece of furniture, but nearly everyone wants a rocking chair of some kind in the room they are using as a nursery or their lounge, when they have a new baby. It's a really soothing place to settle a fussy baby and a comfortable place for feeding. But before you rush out and buy a rocking chair for your nursery, think about the following suggestions:

Traditional rocking chairs are less likely to wear out than more modern glider rocking chairs which have hinges and slides. But everyone has a preference that they find more comfortable and that is the key to picking your chair.
Sit in the rocking chair in the shop. If you already have a baby - hold your baby in a sleeping position and rock. Find out which motion you find most soothing and check that you have a comfortable place to put your arms, especially if you are nursing. Whatever type of motion you go for - make sure that it's smooth. There is nothing worse than finally getting your baby settled and then they get woken by a sudden jolt in the chair movement. The gliders can be greased but it's not a good sign if the chair is sticking before you even get it out the shop.
Noise is another issue. Some rocking chairs are just noisier than others and can often squeak. Check both for noise when rocking but also when getting up and sitting down. It's something that wouldn't necessarily bother an adult but will drive you crazy in the middle of the night with a newborn baby trying to stay asleep.
Think about footrests and ottomans. Some people prefer a rocking footrest, others like their feet to stay stationary. Some rocking chairs include the footstool in the price. Try them out in the shop and decide if having one is a priority for you.
Finally think about what color, pattern and style you want to complement the look of your nursery or lounge. You can buy removable cushions which will give you more color choice and makes washing them easier. You don't have to buy cushions - you can bring color and pattern in through the choice of woods or materials that your chair is made from.

Can you put rocking chairs outdoors? I live in quite a rainy area and am worried it will get ruined.

If you want to put your rocking chair outside, you need to buy a rocking chair that is specifically designed for that purpose. It needs to be weatherproof, and not have material padding that can't withstand rain etc. Read this article that gives some really good information about outdoor rocking chairs and how they are different from indoor ones. http://www.outdoorrockingchair.com/

How much does a modern rocking chair cost?

That depends how much you have to spend. Modern rocking chairs are so varied in their style and the materials that they are made from that you can't guess how much it will cost you. I've seen modern rocking chairs that start around $300 up to several thousands of dollars for custom made ones.
