Question about Seagate Expansion 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External ST910004EXA101-RK Hard Drive

Seagate Expansion 1TB external Desktop Hard Drive (9sf2A4-500) not detected.em?

Approx 2 yrs old. Was working fine yesterday. Today not detected (Windows XP). Green light comes on for a second then turns off completely. I can hear the drive, humming not clicking. Help!!

Sounds like driver problem to me. Re install the driver by using installation disc, or if you have lost your CD, than use this Driver Update Software to update. I hope this helped.

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.

You are in trouble!
The buzzing sound is the heads trying to realign themselves at the beginning of the platter.
You could try putting it on a side and hope gravity helps.
But i'm afraid its broke beyond repair.

You may want to open the drive and check the internal connections first to make sure none came loose after you have powered it down.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.

Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care. this is a real hard drive and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

If a drive is CLICKING after an accident there is a very strong possibility that it is dead or dying. This is known as the "click of death".

Is this on the same computer? (dual boot)
ANd is this a USB drive?
If so, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. That can help solve usb device recognition problems.

Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer using Windows 7 or later. You could try chkdisk /f at a command prompt or get the testdisk app to identify deeper issues with the drive.

Install seagate expansion


New drives have to be readied for use. Try Start > Run (aka Search in Win 7) type dskmgmt.msc. Look for your drive there. It should be without a drive letter. Right clicking will give you the options of initializing, creating disc partitions, and assigning logical drives. If this seems a little daunting. A wizard should load. If not there is refresh icon on the tool bar. You may want break down the 1TB down to a few partition because of the large size.

I have a 1TB seagate expansion external hard drive and i was wondering if i had to plug it in to a power source other than my computers usb port. My teacher has has some really small one and that didn't...


Some do and some do not. if there is no power input jack for DC input then you don't need external power. The 5 volt supply to the USB will power it fine.
