Question about Kenwood KDC-128 CD Player

1 Answer

Got a new Kenwood KDC-128 car radio recently, fitted it but the radio presets would not stay when the ignition was turned off. Then it stopped working altogether and I noticed the 10amp fuse at the back had blown and the audio fuse in my car fuse box had blown. I have changed the fuses and tried connecting the wires again but nothings worked........do I need to get the radio replaced? I drive a 99 Peugeot 306 van.

You need to hook the yellow wire off the back of the radio up straight to the battery this keeps memory power to the head unit then wire the wires in color coded sequence red to red black to black so on and so forth if this doesnt fix it you might want to think about replacing head unit

:I shorted out my kdc 128 head unit and i switched all the fuses but it still wont turn on. any ideas?

Firstly, the main wires from the KDC-128 you need to check are:

RED - this should be connected to the vehicle's +12v IGNITION wire.
YELLOW - this should be connected to the vehicle's =12v BATTERY wire.
EARTH - i) some tuners will only earth when the tuner itself, is screwed into the vehicle's chassis (i.e. a metal mounting bracket); ii) some tuners require the BLACK wire to be attached to the vehicle's chassis (i.e. a metal mounting bracket).

Secondly, if the above wires are connected correctly, then you should suspect the fuse on rear of the tuner has blown (even if it LOOKS ok). Replace and see what happens.

Thirdly, if all above are ok, then you have a short somewhere on the vehicle.

Is your clock keeping the right time? Are your radio presets retaining their memory?

How to unlock the stereo

Unfortunately Kenwood codes are only available from the Main Dealer or by using a Radio Decoding Service who will connect a laptop to read the working code inside your radio`s memory chip (EEPROM)

Check the yellow wire connection on your wiring harness... This is the wire that provides continuous power even when the ignition is off. This is how the radio remembers presets/time and such. Every time you turn off the car, the radio "resets" because you dont have the yellow wire connected to an ALWAYS HOT wire.

If you cannot find a hot wire, then you can run a wire from the yellow on the back of your radio directly to the positive terminal on your battery. Dont worry, it doesnt draw enough power to run your battery down.

Most cars have a cigarette lighter or power port somewhere that is always hot. You could always run the yellow wire off of one of these.

Just find a way to get the yellow wire on a hot wire and your stereo will remember the presets.

Stop kenwood KDC-mp239 loosing radio settings with ignition off

You have two power leads bringing battery power into the radio. One is switched off when the ignition is off and the other power lead is always on. That second one is the one you may have wired wrong. You need to check that one out to make sure it stays on when the key is turned off. Good luck.

The remote lead on the back of the radio should be a blue wire with a white stripe. If this wire is not present, then you can use an accessory lead in the car or the accessory lead (red) at the radio harness. Hope this is helpful.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!
