SOURCE: cleaning the blades

An air compressor would work. It might be a bit too powerful for it.

Those cans of air they sell in office supply stores might work too.

My quiet bathroom fan makes a roaring noise

The roaring noise is probably the fan blades (looks like a hamster wheel) are worn out as it rotates on the spindle/shaft.

It may be a problem with the 4" exhaust ducting, that connects to the exit part of the fan, has come loose. Theres a damper (kinda like a flapper) at the fan/ducting joint may have broken off and may be sitting sideways in the ducting flapping around inside the duct.

At any rate I highly doubt its wiring. Sounds like its time to pull the fan cover off (turn the power off first via the wall switch or the service panel breaker would be even better) and look at the fan blades. Clean off any dust bunnies, lint, etc. and turn the fan back on. Did the noise stop?

If nothing looks out of place and it still makes noise you'll have to get in the attic and remove the ducting from the fan and see if theres a problem at the connection there. Maybe a squirrel put its bedding in the ducting? It happens.

Could be lots of reasons for the noise but wiring it wrong wouldn't cause roaring. The fan wouldn't work, or worst burn up, if wiring was the issue. The problem is the more than likely the fan blade assy is worn out or something is restricting the air flow in the ducting going to the outside of the house.

The heating element and heater fan in our FV-11VHL1 vent unit stopped working. How do you get at the heater box assembly to replace the fuse or thermostat? It appears to be screwed together to the heater...

Hi Ricatoni,

The procedure for doing it as as follow , patience is required..:)

First you should remove the cover by pulling down and squeezing the wire arms on each side.

Then You need an extra long screwdriver to remove the entire motor/fan/light assembly from the housing (8 screws total).

Place the assembly on the floor and look for the fuse on top.

The fuse is on the motor and not near the heater portion.

It is a ceramic, not glass, cylindrical fuse, 20 amps, 125 volts.

This fuse is sold as a microwave oven fuse & costs about 2 bucks at a hardware store.

Then you can replace, hence reinstall and then you're done.

Hope this helps ..:)

FAN DOES NOT GO ON AND CAN THE FAN MOTOR JUST BE CHANGED WITHOUT REPLACING THE COMPLETE UNIT ??

Yes and maybe.
If you open unit, usually fan motor is plugged in, and motor is removable with bolts.
The problem is finding new fan that fits same housing without spot-welding and drilling.
I did google image search for "replacement vent fan motors" and results show choices.
For example Nutone:
http://nutoneproducts.typepad.com/nutone-products/nutone-bath-fans/page/2/
If you can locate same brand vent at local box store, you can use parts from new one to repair old one without project of replacing fan housing.

20 years ago, motors went to electric repair shop and they rewound the motor.
But today, motors are landfilled or shipped overseas for recycling.
All costs are energy, and right now, cost of re-wind is more than buying new motor, or new vent.

Also take advantage of fixya expert assistance live.
For a price, expert works with you via e-mail while you work on fan or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.
