yes proceeding with deliberate care following your good suggestion, without removing any screws from the back of the laptop, under an illuminated magnifying glass, from the hinge side on the ceiling of removed battery compartment, are visible a row of plastic barbs that attach a rectangular cover as wide as the keyboard and as wide as the function key row.on the left top of which is a removal initiation slot, from the roof of the battery compartment release the barbs one after another. After the keyboard top cover is removed, remove the exposed 2 screws that secure the key board. The keyboard connector is at the bottom of the keyboard, with care , Hinge open the keyboard by lifting the top part of the keyboard.Do not remove the keyboard connector. at that position remove the 2 exposed Memory cover screws change 2 memory bars for 2 Gb total, reverse close. on restart the control panel reports the new memory. thanks.

If you're brave, you can try this, but be careful about what you touch. 1st of course, unplug the power and remove the battery, just for some safety for both you and the laptop. 2nd, take a very small flatblade screwdriver and gently pry where the hinge is between the piece of plastic that covers the hinge and the display. It should pop up. Gently pull up on the piece that covers the power button but be careful not to pull all the way away from the PC as there will probably be a cable attached. You might have to pry the other side of the plastic up at the hinge also. Sometimes the mfg. puts screws in at the back to hold this in so check there 1st also. Once you get the top piece off, there should be 3 to 4 screws holding the keyboard on. Depending on the model it may instead have a single screw holding it on from the bottom. If so they usually put a keyboard symbol next to the screw on the bottom. Make sure you use a static strap when removing or replacing the RAM so you don't shock it with body static. Attach the strap to one of the standoffs on the back used to attach one of the connectors on the back. This is a safe place to ground yourself. After replacing the RAM put it back together in reverse. Most laptops are dissassembled this way from the top, but not all. In some cases the hinge cover is removed separately and then the cover to the power button which covers the top of the laptop under the display, but on the laptop itself. Hope this helps.

My Toshiba u205-s5002 does not boot all the way. I power up and see the screen word Toshiba, Microsoft WP and then the screens just goes black. 1. Black screen in Safe mode 2. Does not reboot. Says system...

Unless you're familiar with Microsoft diagnostics and XP Recovery Console, I think that the quickest way to solve the problem is to use the XP CD and perform a "repair installation". Beware that the supplied CD disk is indeed an installation CD and not a "wipeout and reinstall" disk (many recovery disks are programmed like this, and using them will make you LOSE any personal data in the laptop!). If it is, you'll have to boot using a backup LiveCD (e.g. UBCD,, or XP Rescue), backup the data on an external USB unit, and then do the recovery. On the plus side, this procedure is much more thorough than Windows' repair install. On the minus side, you'll have to reinstall any programs and customizations.

Try, however, to boot with UBCD and check the disk is intact first thing. It might also be a more easily solvable problem, after all.

Disassembly to replace fan

I know I am too late but I just changed the fan in my U205-S5002. I couldn't find instructions anywhere so I decided to give it a try. It is very easy.
First remove all the screws below the laptop. There is only one small cover below the laptop. Remove the cover and disconect the Hard Drive. Now remove the plastic strip right above the keyboard by using a flat small screwdriver. Do not be afraid, you'll not break it. After removing the strip you will see 2 S3 screws. Remove them and the keyboard will be free to move. In order to remove the keyboard you'll have to disconnect a couple of connectors, by lightly pulling first the plastic stoppers (colored brown) out. After you have removed the keyboard you will see the fan in the upper left corner. Remove the 2 screws holding the fan and disconnect the connector (pay attention to the way the plug or the female goes in: the holes are on top). Installing the new fan is a piece of cake and so is putting everything back.
I hope this helps.
