The simplest thing to do is to use StartPatch, if your Wii is running System Menu 4 or higher, or StarFall if you're running System Menu 3.2. (To check your system menu version, go to you Wii Settings; the version number will be on the upper right.)
These applications can apply various modifications to your Wii, including one that will allow you to play import games and another that turns off the annoyingly repetitive system menu background music. There is also a modification that prevents the Wii from checking to see whether a game disk includes a system update. If you use StartPatch/StarFall to install this modification, you will no longer have game disks insisting on updating before you can play them.
It should be noted that these applications, since they rewrite your system flash memory, can be considered somewhat dangerous.
You can play it safer with Gecko OS, which lets you play import and update-insistent games without altering flash memory. It has been found that at least one game, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Gecko fails on.
I had a friend with the same issue. I just modded his wii and then he backed the games up to a hard drive and they played perfectly without an update being needed. The best place to get your wii modded is www.wiihdmods.com
Try updating your Wii in the Settings menu, you will have to have a Wifi connecting to do this. If you do not have WiFi in your house can update your console via a New Release Wii Game such as Mario Kart
Most new games like Mario Kart or Madworld must have the 4.0 update to be played

try calling nintendo for troubleshooting first there very helpful, but unfortunately at one point i had the same problem the laser had to be replaced so yes i did have to send it in..but just for comfort they are expedient on there repairs. one last note if you tried to modify the wii in any way, such as hacks illegal downloads your just out of luck as they will not repair it
It may be possible you bought a chipped Wii without knowing it. In this case, modchips have been known to cause problems when updating. Usually the drive will be able to read a disc from another region, but it will cause problems on an update. Otherwise, make sure your disc isn't damaged causing a bad read. If an error code is given upon failure to install, check that error code with Nintendo's website.
