I wanted to make sure that my speakers were not the cause of the issue. but since it has that message without the speakers then I guess it is something internal. I will get this replaced. I will come back to you at a later date when the replacement comes in. Thanks so much for your help!

I have a Sony receiver model Str - de 435 it constantly flash Protector and I tried everything to fix this any ideas

The protector indicator usually indicates that one of your amplifiers has shorted output transistors. This is not a user repairable problem and the amp will have to be taken into the shop for service.

Turning it on the onlything it says is Welcome Protector and does nothing else

Is the message "Protector" or "Protected"? Several models will say Protected if there is a voltage/power issue with either the unit or the speakers attached.

This can be triggered by a short in a wire to the speakers or to the unit itself or a blown fuse inside the unit. Unplug the receiver from the incoming power from both the receiver and the outlet, if possible. (This applies if it is a free-standing unit; units in cars are different.) Then unplug the speaker connections. Reconnect the AC power and attempt to turn on. Does the error persist? If it has been resolved, plug in the speakers one by one. If you get the message as you plug in the speakers, check the wires for a short. Check if your speakers are drawing more power than the receiver is capable of handling. (This only applies if the speakers are directly connected to the receiver.)

If the message occurs before you plug in the speakers, check for a problem with the ground as well as for a short in the rest of the power connections on the unit. If there is no obvious damage, then if the unit is still under warranty, consult the manufacturer for a warranty repair. Otherwise you'll need to open the unit and check the circuitry. (Replacing the fuse may work. However it will not resolve the problem if there is another problem that is causing the fuse to blow.)

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the make/model and specifics of the receiver for more information.

My sony receiver STR-DE135 is showing a protector message

Check for shorted speaker cables, or even a bad speaker. I'd start by disconnecting all speakers, see if the indicator goes out. If so, try one speaker at a time until you find which channel is bad, and then examine the cables carefully for things like a stray wire strand. Less likely, but possible is a shorted speaker. If you disconnect them all, and still have the protector circuit on, it's an internal issue, and you're going to need a technician.

When playing DVD, it's sometimes display 'PROTECT' and stop playing.

Check if you receive the error when playing any DVD in particular.

What happens when you take out the DVD and try playing it again? Does it play

This protector error denotes several possible problems. Heat, volume level and incorrect DVD settings may be the cause of the problem. The following steps will help you correct your problem and rid your amp of its "Protector" error.

  • Examine your volume setting to be certain that your volume knob is not at maximum. Having your volume cranked too high can cause the capacitors to overheat, shutting down the receiver.
  • Unplug your receiver and disconnect your speakers from the terminals on the back. This will allow you to determine if the error is internal. Plug your receiver back in and look for the same error message. If you continue to get the protector error without having your speakers connected, you may have an internal electrical problem. In this case, contact Sony about finding a repair center.
  • Reconnect your speakers one at a time. The order of connection doesn't matter. When reconnecting, be sure that you do not have your positive and negative speaker wires crossed in any way. After each connection, test your amp by running it with a source. Give each speaker a few minutes of power before connecting the next one. This will help you isolate which speaker terminal is causing the error. When the protector error returns, take note of which speaker connection caused it. Check this speaker wire for shorts or torn shielding.
  • Examine your ohm rating of your speakers if you have no shorts or wiring issues. Sony receivers are not compatible with speakers lower than 4 ohms. Connecting a lower ohm-rated speaker will cause an error.
  • Turn off the surround sound option if you have both your A and B position speakers in use.
  • Keep your receiver well ventilated. Overheating due to poor ventilation can also cause Protector errors.
  • Examine the sampling frequency of your connected DVD player. If the error only occurs when you watch a DVD, the sampling frequency of the DVD player may be set too high. Check the sampling rating in your receiver's manual and in the DVD player

It says protector mode what does that mean

If PROTECT , PROTECTOR or a P is flashing in the display of the A/V receiver, there may be an incorrect connection or an improper setting. Try following these steps to resolve this issue:

NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the A/V receiver status after completing each step.
  1. Check the speakers and speaker wires for proper connections.
  2. Reduce the volume level. IMPORTANT: If the A/V receiver is used at maximum volume level, it may enter the PROTECT mode. Maximum volume listening will cause the A/V receiver to run very hot and may drain the output capacitors.
  3. If applicable to your model, disable the surround sound option if both the A and B speakers are being used simultaneously.
  4. Ensure the top of the A/V receiver has proper ventilation to keep it from overheating.
  5. If the message only occurs when using a DVD player, the sampling frequency may be set too high. IMPORTANT: Some A/V receivers provide compatibility with the higher sampling frequencies through alternate connections. Consult the owners manual for specific information.
  6. Unplug the AC power cord for approximately 1 to 2 hours to reset the output transformers.
If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required.

I get a message "protector check code 11" and then it powers off

Page 59 of the manual (avaliable at after you register)...

Irregular current is output from the speakers. Turn off the receiver , check the speaker conenction and turn on power again"

What this means is it senses a short circuit in one or more of the speaker paths. Disconnect all speakers, see if it works with none; then start connecting speakers again until you find the problem.

Disconnect all speakers at the receiver and power it back on. If it stays on, check all speaker wires and speakers for shorts. If it cuts out, it needs service. If you need detailed troubleshooting help on this after testing receiver without speakers connected and it passes, post a comment and I can walk you thru it. Hope this helps.

I keep getting protector on my display and all sound stops

The protection message indicates that a problem was detected inside the unit and it has shutdown to prevent further damage. This usually indicates shorted outputs, but in your case, if the unit works for a while, it can be overheating. Check the speaker wires to be sure that they are not touching at either end. Also, verify that the speakers are 8Ohm speakers. Running into 4 ohm speakers makes the amp work harder and generates more heat which is also monitored. Try running the receiver without the speakers and see if you still get the protection message, if so, then there is a problem internally that will need further investigation. Please update this with any additional information from the results of the experiments above.
