Question about Kenmore 53642 / 53644 Side by Side Refrigerator
Freezer nor Frigerator getting cold.
Anytime you have your symptoms, you are so low on freon that there is no perceptable cooling. If you can put your hand on the compressor "high side" (discharge side and also the smaller refrigerant tube exiting the hermetic compressor) while the compressor has been running a few minutes and it is not hot or very warm to the touch, you are low or out of freon. Refrigerators do not normally utilize expansion valves but have capillary tubes at the inlet to the evaporator coil, which would normally eliminate possible trouble. If your refrigerator does have an expansion valve ahead of the evaporator coil, it could be the culprit, if it "sticks" closed, preventing refrigerant from circulating.
Usually when a refrigerant circuit begins to loose freon, you first notice that "frost" may begin to form on the evaporator coil (refrigerator side). Look in at the rear inside panel of the refrigerator to see if there is a layer or buildup of ice / frost on that panel. That is a sure sign that you are low (but not out of freon).
Usually, there is already a freon service valve for adding refrigerant.
If you are mechanically inclined, I could give you more detailed instructions to "charge" your refrigerator. You must have a freon can tap (for the appropriate refrigerant), a refrigerant hose that mates with the "access valve" on the compressor and to the freon can tap / valve.
