Question about Onkyo TX-DS797 Receiver
Hi, I have a DS 797 digital reciever hooked up to my Sony widescreen. About 8 months ago a poping sound was coming from the left main speaker when on dolby, all speakers, enhanced, well all setting except stereo. Sometimes the pop would move to the center speaker. I do not think it is the speakers. I miss the surround sound. How much do you think it will cost to fix the reciever? Im in dallas texas, thanks and happy new year!
I have the same reciever, and had the same problem. Contact Onkyo, this is a known issue where defective DSP chips were used and manifest problems with a popping / clicking sound when using surround settings. These receivers also have a Dolby Digital input issue that can cause audio dropouts when watching cable or SAT broadcasts that encode DD using a 'newer' broadcast encoding methods. Onkyo is covering the cost of that repair for me now, even though the receiver is 5 years old now....

This type of repair falls into the "major troubleshooting" category, as it has not failed completely and it might take hours to track down the source of the noise. It could be in the input circuits, or it could be in the outputs which feeds back to the input through a negative feedback network. You are correct, the speakers would not cause this. At any rate, it might be more expensive to repair than to replace. But just to make sure it's the receiver and not digital noise radiating from the TV, try it with the TV turned off. If the noise disappears, it might simply be too close to the TV.
