Question about Zanussi ZI921 / 8FF Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Fridge on Fridge freezer not working

Hi there,

we have a Zanussi Frostfree fridge freezer, getting on to 20 years old.

Suddenly, the fridge on the appliance has stopped working. The freezer is running fine, but the Fridge isn't cooling.

I've heard the Freezer runs the fridge from the same fan, anbd taking the back panel off, I found the fan to be working fine.

Any help would be thoroughly appreciated.

Thank you.

None that I noticed. Everything seems to be OK. I was suprised, as I expected the fan to be covered in ice etc, thus, easy fix, one impressed missus.

But no. The fan was totally clear.

    Thanks for the reply mate.

Checking the drain pan, it is clear, the drain hole seems to be totally clear too.

The coil in the back of the Freezer appears to running fine, as a thin layer of frost is buildling on it.

Sorry mate. You've lost me a bit there.

The Fridge Freezer has the freezer compartment on the bottom. Can you elaborate on the freezer adjustment?

Also, there are three lights on the top of the fridge.

One seems to indicate that the freezer is working and has a triagle like icon. Glowing red?

One has a S for an icon and comes on (orange) when I turn a dial with S and N on it? a booster?

The third isn't on, and seems to be colored green. It has a strange icon, like a line with a wave through it?

Also, the light inside the fridge compartement no longer comes on when I open the door!

    I;m so confused!

I await your reply and i am very gratefull for your help and time.

I will check mate. How do I get to the duct? I'm a complete novice but not afraid to give it a go. Am I looking behind the unit? Or inside?

    Thanks.

  • karl_croft Jan 03, 2009

The doesn't appear to be any duct. I am trying to get images of the back of the fridge and freezer... Please bear with me. Maybe they will help you more. .

    Thanks

Ok there is a drain pan under the evap. coil under the fan that may be clogged and full of ice there is a 3/4" hole the water drains out of that needs cleared if there is a puddle of ice over it , the ice will also effect the airflow traveling down the duct to the fresh food section of the unit.
If there is no ice puddle at the bottom of the refrigerator then make sure the unit is cooling well by making sure it has been running for 10 min. or so and checking the coil in the freezer , it should have a small layer of frost on it showing its getting cold the whole way through it. Let me know how this works.

If all of those issues are ok there must be something blocking the airflow to the lower section if there is a freezer adjustment in the freezer turn it to the center of the adjustment and see if you feel any air coming out of the top of the lower section of the refrigerator. Tell me what happens.

I was thinking of a different model now I know which one you have , your cool air is supplied by the fan in the freezer traveling up through the center to the top of the unit , if there is no air coming out of the very top vent and your sure the fan is running there may be ice in the duct or the flap/damper in the duct is stuck closed. Let me know which problem it has.

The duct will be inside the unit running up the center of the back wall normally , you can find it by looking from the freezer , the fan in the freezer has a duct from it blowing upward to the fresh food section. Tell me how this works.

You more than likely have a bad relay or capacitor. Hopefully it is not the compressor. You may want to consider replacing it if is more than 10-12 years old. The other possibility is there is a leak in the freon.

Zanussi fridge freezer frostfree ZX 57/3 W not working

It sounds like you have a plugged defrost drain line. This is where the water goes to in the bottom of your freezer when it goes through the defrost (removal of ice from the freezer coil) cycle. It sounds like that hole is plugged and now the water/ice has now frozen in the vent that lets air circulate down into your refrigerator compartment. What I usually do in this case is to unplug the refrigerator, empty out the freezer compartment. Usually I also end up either pulling off the back panel or the bottom panel (in the freezer compartment) Looking for that defrost drain hole and actually I use a hair dryer. I can sometimes do this also by pouring small amounts of HOT tap water onto it and then sopping/absorbing it away with a sponge or dishcloth. I repeat this until I get the water to go down the drain tube.

Hope this helps,
Sai.

Fridge does not cool

lo1972

Sounds like ice built up on the evaporator coils inside the freezer. thus hindering air flow to the refridgerator section. Is there ice build up in the freezer? This is assuming the temperature control didn't get changed inadverttily.

Hope this helps
