Question about Kenmore Freezers
Yesterday the Ice Dispenser just started making a really loud and REALLY ANNOYING humming noise.
Funny thing is that the ice maker has never even worked. We bought the Fridge / Freezer New and had never plugged it in due to lack of space to fit it in and rented places that already had a fridge. We later bought a house and finally got to use it bought the ice maker has never worked. And now due to a remodel in the kitchen has been sitting in the dining room for approx. 6 months. Fridge working fine but Freezer not even hooked up to water for this 6 months. Suddenly yesterday it just started humming LOUDLY and smelling like it is getting hot. Like slightly burnt rubber or plastic.
Something we also noticed that we had never noticed before.....when the door is shut (or the light button is pushed in when you close the door) the channel that the ice would come down to be dispensed through comes open and stays open while the door is shut. This seems that it would let alot of cold air escape the freezer and also let warm air in. Not sure if this is what is happening but seems odd to open when the door is shut. And close when the door is open.
We took off the outside panel where the ice dispenser is and there is another cover that has a sticker with these numbers / letters.............
Can you please HELP?
CHeck to make sure your freezer is 0 to 5 degrees. If it is warmer than that the water valve wont open to the ice maker. Have you replaced the water filter?

Water frozen in the freezer supply line - you need to thaw out the freezer. About six hours, door open, turn freezer OFF. You'll need a cooler with dry ice for your frozen food. 99% certain it'll work after that.

SOURCE: ice maker icing up
Sounds like you may have a couple of problems here. The frost build up could be from a bad door seal. Moist air can be drawn in and collect on the inside. As for the water temp, it sounds like the water line connected to the refrigerator could be tapped off a hot water line. It needs to be connected to a potible cold water line.

The four prong (flat) plug to the ice maker (in the freezer compartment) in my Whirlpool Gold SbyS Refrigerator; should I be able to test for 120 Volts with a tester, should this plug be 'HOT"?

You can buy a kit from whirlpool. In the kit is a metal tab that mounts onto the defrost heater. It is long enough to go into the hole. When the heater comes on for defrost the heat transfers down to the hole and keeps it from getting plugged up with ice. Part number 819043
