Does it not open from inside if not will have to snap of handle all together and see if you can get a hole of the cable that opens the door with some plyers if not you will have to take of the door card from the inside will be a clart on with limited space then will hve to find the cable to pull to make door open hope this helps ivan
which clips are you talking about the ones that when the rods are in place they hold them in the holes of the door mech if so they should be on the old rods if not and you need them i would try vw forums vw them selves ebay and i know this sounds daft but facebook trading goes on there all the time so im told ps to open door see if you can get the small loop on mech that the interior door handle goes to that should open door but might be worth looking for a metal coat hanger and using that to pull it open as i thing it gets a bit of a tight squeez if you put your hand up hope this helps again all the best ivan uk

SOURCE: My driver side door handle is broken on a 2003 VW.
remove the inside door trim and remove the weatherproof plastic that covers the holes in the door behind the trim.
You should have access to the door handle nuts and rods to remove the handle.
re assemble in the reverse order and make sure the weatherproof plastic is put back on and sealed or your door may let water enter the car via the door

I think the mechanism is broken, if I am not mistaken the exterior handle has plastic retaining clips that often break---a new exterior handle should do it, try to order by vin so it may come painted

open the door and remove the door panel there is a small metal rod that goes from the outer handle to the latch mechanism that holds the door shut look to see if it has just come undone or if the small retainer clip has broken or came off either way it's a fairly straight forward repair

THAT DOES HELP IVAN BUT MY INTIERIOR IS ALL OUT OF THE CAR I HAVE NO PANELS TO WORRY ABOUT. I CAN SEE A COUPLE RODS JUST NOT THE CORRECT ONE. I WILL USE A FLASHLIGHT AND MIRROR WHEN I GET HOME AND TRY THAT. I ALREADY HAVE THE HANDLE WITH AND NOE WITHOUT THE DOOR LOCK IN IT. I COULDNT FIND A WHOLE INSIDE MECHANISM SO I HOPE THIS IS ALL ILL NEED. WHERE WOULD I FIND THE CLIPS IF NEED BE?
