Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

GE Monogram (model ZMC1095SF03)

The GE Monogram model ZMC1095SF03 is a great machine to look at and for show. However, it lacks quality and customer support from GE. We purchase a brand new home from Lennar Homes and they had installed appliances. Our Monogram dual use microwave (ZMC1095SF03) gave out within the first 18 months. Fortunately right after the warranty expired. We call GE and they sent a technician who replaced the magnetron. The technician charged a small fortune for about 20 minutes of work. I was shocked when he billed us $389 dollars. To my disbelieve the magnetron just broke down again. A little over a year since the last repair. That another $400 to repair. Since I didn't pay for the extended warranty I had to dish out more money. At this rate I'll be paying about $400 ever other year for this piece of ART.

Same problem, GE appliances are terrible. I will never ever ever purchase GE again. Nothing but problems, from this microwave magnatron issue, to the washing machine rubber door boot. Stay clear from GE.

GE, couldn't even find the model number. They pretty much, in a nice way, told me I was out of luck, it would be $149. for them to tell me why it's not heating. If it's the magnatron tube, they'll cover the PART ONLY!!

I took in to ABT, where it was purchased, it's now, three days later, they still haven't called to let me know what the problem is and how much it will cost to repair.

I purchased a Panasonic oven for $79. and am making do for now.

Thanks.

SOURCE: Need replacement microwave to fit existing trim kit

Finally built up the courage to call GE Appliance number and weave my way through the phone menu system. Pressed the right menu option (sales) to speak to someone about trim kits. Found out that the trim kit model number is JX1527MWW. Then called back to select a different menu option (other) and learned from someone else that since the trim kit model is more than 1-2 years old, there's a slim-to-none chance any new microwave models will work with it, and even if there was they couldn't easily cross-reference against a model that old to tell me which one (or something to that effect). So I hit a dead end. Only option for me at this point is to buy a new microwave with new trim kit.

(Personal note: I think the trim kit business is a racket, in bed with the microwave manufacturers. Why else would there be no standard dimensions for microwaves by now--like refrigerators have--and why is it a few pieces of sheet metal cost over $150? Pretty convenient that every microwave model needs its own trim kit model!)

SOURCE: New GE Magnetron. Where does this new HV diode go?

Fixed it. There was a back capacitor fuse (I believe that's what it's called) on the old magnetron. I removed it and put it on the new magnetron. The HV diode is on the big silver capacitor and very easy to replace. I just didn't see it. It was definitely the magnetron and I hope that this new one comes with a warranty for 5 more years.

SOURCE: Microwave working when door opens

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

SOURCE: Hi - I have the same problem as llofranco (posted

Generally shops charge about $75-90 to visit the home and $75-90 more to do the work. That rate is set by each shop.

I would note if there is any unusual noise or if is it louder or quieter than normal.

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(even if the magnetron passes these tests, it can still be bad. If you have high voltage and the diode is good, assume the magnetron is bad)

If you or someone you know want to replace the magnetron yourself, you will need to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions
here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

If it's under magnetron warranty, GE will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.

I have the exact same problem at exactly 12 moths and 22 days. Just out of warranty, wouldn't you know. Sears says it will be $150 just to show up. What a piece of junk.

How do I change the lightbulb on a GE Monogram Microvae

The lamp is located inside the microwave housing which has to be removed to gain access for replacement. I agree with GE that removing the housing exposes you to dangerous voltages (even with power removed). The old lamp is removed from its socket and the new one installed, then the housing is reinstalled.

Display turn off and the buttons are not clickable

The owner's manual is here. Be sure you have the clock set correctly.

You can also try a hard reset by unplugging the oven for a couple of minutes, plugging it back in, resetting the clock, and trying again.

This may not help your spirit much, but it appears you are not alone:
GE Complaints
And, I would refrain from buying any other GE anythings since they are trying to dump their entire consumer products (appliances) division. I don't doubt some schlock Asian outfit like Funai will be willing to milk the name for a few years and build still more crappy products.
What a pity, still another formerly great American company.

Peeling paint

You need to thoroughly clean it, then sand it smooth to removew all the loose paint.

Once it's squeaky clean and dry, you can apply high-temperature appliance paint, which is available in brush-on or spray-on form at big box stores like Wal-Mart, home improvement centers like Lowe's and appliance parts stores.

I would suspect a couple of wires are crossed.

GE puts mini-manuals in their units, which have wiring diagrams, schematics, etc. Very handy.

It will be folded up in a small envelope, usually behind the control panel or hidden elsewhere. That should help you.
