Here my PC:
I also have a Pioneer 105 and Nec 1300A that are in externalenclosures, but I tend to stick with the Cyberdrive right now. The BTCwrite some media fine (ProdiscS03) and others not so good (Rytek G03and G04) so I primarily use it to read tough disks as that is all Iconsider it really reliable at. Its a shot in the dark, so please don't vote unless I FIXYA! thanks!

If it is your computer your login should be enough for the admin - if not login as the admin which will be your login id. If you are a user on this computer than you need the owner to login and this will resolve your problem. Since you got this from your school chances are they never wiped clean the system and you should do so if you are the new owner of the computer. The owner manual you should have with this computer will give you the steps you need in order to wip it clean and reset to manufacutor settings.
what operating system did you replace XP 32bit, XP 64bit? Was the version of Vista you used the 32bit or the 64bit. You may need to go to HP.Com and look for replacement drivers for the DVD. You can also use the windows update to obtain correct drivers for the DVD if they have tested them already. Another option is to go to the manufacturer of the DVD device and see what they list for the driver. Just remember there is a big differance between the 32bit and 64bit drivers. Read on the Vista system you installed and see what level was installed in your system. Regards, rcampsr
You can download the drivers for the MB, Video, audio, modem, & LAN etc. for your model Compaq from www.compaq.com
You do not need drivers for DVD ROM and CD-RW, you may need some software/plug-ins for to play DVD movies.
The bad news first... Vista hates and will not drive cannon products.
The other bad news... Cannon went out of the printer business and never wrote a vista driver.
Now some more bad news... vista is not really as fully developed as the XP os and don't really know if it will ever be, it's pretty, but it's one problem after another.
The solution is either buy new printer/scanner or revert Ur system to an XP os. This is the sort if issue that windows went back to selling and supporting XP.
This is a very traveled road!
