I have the same problem but honestly the performance makes up for it... amazing.. just simply amazing.... make sure you get a 64 bit operating system to take advantage of more than 3.25 gigs of ram... also if you plan on getting vista, get ultimate or business enterprise because home and home premium will only detect one processor and there is no fix for this

I was having the same problem and I just fixed it yesterday. You will never guess what was causing the loud fan noise.... give up? the NVIDIA Quadro Graphics Cards that were in there...... I bought an ATI Radeon 3870 yesterday popped it in, installed the drivers, and now my computer does not sound like an airplane anymore....... this card is amazing and its on newegg now for 80 bucks..... itds GDD4 as well and the games look better than a playstation 3........ this card also improved my overall system performance drastically.....

From what I have read about these, simple answer is no. The fan is controlled by the bios and replacing it with a different fan really wont help, removing it wont help, just makes the others work harder. The only thing I could come up with is to maybe add other cooling devices to the computer to slow down the need for the fan.

Power supply dell precision 490

I would recommend a 500Watt power supply, they are around 30 pounds and can be bought from any PC supplier.

Remove stuck heatsink

Use the twist motion, twist the heatsink back and forth on the horizontal plane gently. This will allow air to move between the two flat surfaces.

Therefore reducing suction.

Take care!

2 things.
The power led flashing amber can mean a failure of one rail in the power supply, or a bad connection (The cables are removable from the power supply) so you may try reseating power connections internally.
1 & 3 LEDs can mean a RAM failure

I have an FX5800 Nvidia CAD card with 4 GB ram, for high end graphics rendering. It is installed in a Dell Precision 490 with dual Xeons and 64gb of ram > I fire up the computer and it runs ok but...

It sounds like the card is bad. If it came with the computer, I suggest getting in contact with Dell.

The two beeps are a post error, most linked with a bad Video card. If it is still within the warranty period, it's best to get the part changed.

Dell precision 490 led 1 & 4 on

If you are getting no video at all, then we can use the diagnostic LEDs and the power LED to help determine the failure.

Dell Precision 670 Workstation REALLY LOUD and NOISY

It could be due to a failture of either the SMPS fan (Power Supply), the system cooling fan or the Videocard fan... Now checking the power Supply fan issue is easy... Take a toothpick {wooden} n insert it between the fan fins at the back of your tower... This is the fan that is visible from the back of your tower... Now if the noise stops then it is the SMPS fan issue

If it still persists then do the same procedure with the CPU fan located on the inside of the tower.. this is a bit tricky but you seem tech saavy enough to do so but anyways this is the link for a step by step procedure of getting inside your desktop

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ws670/en/ug_en/index.htm

The third case is the Graphics Card... now there is no way we can say this with certainty but you can do this... remove all connections from the back of the tower.. remove the graphics card, connect just the power chord n start back up... if the noise is gone then the Video Card is the culprit.. REMEMBER TO REMOVE POWER CHORD ALL TIMES YOU OPEN THE TOWER N BE VERY VERY CAREFUL N FOLLOW THE MANUAL  :-)

Ati or nvidea? which is more reliable and well built for dell

To me it is probably personal preference. I have always like Nvidia, and I have had a couple of systems that had ATI. Nvidia to me seems more stable and more reliable. You might search some sites for benchmark comparisons

Dell Precision 490 constant reboot after ghost image completed

Hello-

I figured out how to ghost a Dell Precision 490 with a 32 bit Windows XP Image! Like you I had the same problem where it would constantly reboot after I imaged it with an existing 490 image. The answer is actually very simple. Boot up your Precision 490 and hit F2 to enter the bios. Select Drives and then SATA Operation, change it to "Raid Autodetect / ATA". Reboot the 490 and re image the machine, it will now work!
