    After it started shuting off I placed a box fan behind it thinking it may have been overheating and it continued shuting off the same. I can soder boards and have my own meters need to know where I should be troubleshooting on this kind of problem. When this goes down the power light flashes on and off about three times until it will not turn back on. If you let it sit for 15 minutes it will turn back on like nothing is wrong.

    Power has been plugged into two different houses and different outlets. Volts and HZ have been checked. No sleep timers are activated that was checked first. Thanks

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, let's try a process of elimination:

  • defective major component (unlikely) - otherwise the unit will not even turn on;
  • heat related (unlikely but still is a possibility) - could only be verified with a hot air blower and/or a can of compressed air;
  • power supply board (likely) - standby +5VDC is being supplied even when in protect mode, but is the mains B+ available. Is there clicking sound when powering up? Is the same clicking sound preceding the auto shut down? If there is a clicking sound, it would be coming from bottom right front;
  • all others which may include:
  1. capacitors;
  2. coolant leak;
  3. cold solder.
This of course would require opening the unit, perform voltage measurements, determine faulty component and subsequent part(s) replacement. Further, a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron would be required. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual (chassis # ATC221 or ITC222) or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings.Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

I think it has gone into protection mode. this is caused when a short circuit is detected by the power management system inside the tv.

Try a hard reset: Unplug the power cord for a full 4 hours; then try it again and see if it will clear the protection fault and reset it.

If the reset does not help you will need to have a tech look at the set and take voltage measurements inside to determoine which section of the tv has failed and what components will need replacement.

Try checking for bad/bulging capacitors on the circuit boards and replace them. some may not show signs of being defective so test them anyway. Also look for any other defective components/burnt components, making sure all solder connections are intact. good luck!

It sounds like a crack in the pc board, this is very hard to troubleshoot, what usually happens is the board heats up and expands seperating one or the pc board circuits thus breaeking contact. If you have time leave the panel off the back and let it run, chances are if it stays on that's what it is. Then you will need a voltmeter to see if the voltage cuts out when she heats up. Put a fan next to it if you can't leave the back open just to see if it's heat related

the common practice is never go down in voltage rating. as a technician i would defintly not go down to 10 volt i suggest you go up 25 would be ok if you can get it to fit

My RCA Bigscreen HDTV will not turn on.

Thats either the flyback or the HV splitter. If the sound is coming from the rear left side its the flyback. If its coming from the front of the set its the HV splitter. They are both easy to replace. I will post a link where you can get replacements with instructions if you would like.
