I had a computer savvy friend install a wireless router in-line with the 2wire to get a stronger signal with it's external antenna. The lap top reads the signal and will connect to it but there is no internet through the 2nd router. The 2nd router is a Netgear WGT624 by the way.

Re: Stronger Wireless Signal with 2701HGB Router?
Netgear's web site has an excellent tutorial on how to do this. It involves turning off the DHCP on the Netgear, and linking the LAN prots of the two routers. There is no connection to the WAN port of the Netgear.

You change the channel in the router's wireless setting. This does not give you a stronger signal BUT you can select a different channel so you do not get interference with other wireless routers in your area that are broadcasting on the same channel.
What you can do here to correct this problem is to access the router setup page and play around with its wireless settings that will provide a stronger signal for your wireless network , the most possible settings that you can change to improve the signal from the wireless router is to change the wireless channel of the router and see which channel works fine with your wireless network and with your IPHONE.
What you can do is make a wide U-shaped sheet of baking foil and point the open end of the U in the direction you need a better signal.
Your Wifi router is unidirectional...this means that it radiates energy in all directions. The tinfoil acts very much like a reflector in a torch and points the energy in the direction you want it to go.
You'll definitely get a stronger signal. The transmitter in your computer may not be powerful enough to reach back to the router, in which case, repeat the tinfoil at the computer end.
It's scruffy, but it works. You can always use coathangers as a frame and make it look arty if you need it permanently.
You can first access the router setup page and change the wireless channel to the highest value to broadcast stronger signal but if that doesn't correct the problem do a firmware upgrade on your router............
Weak signal problem can be fixed by firmware update however, if the client computer is too far from the router, it can't be helped. What you need is a wireless range expander. What it does is give you another 100% signal or atleast stronger signal to the spot or area where you have a weak or dead signal.
Ask them to review you connection speed to make sure your getting the speed you ordered. Linksys is usually pretty good. See if it's faster WITHOUT using the wireless (plug directly into the modem). If it is I can only think of two things... Ether you need to relocate your wireless modem to acheive a stronger signal OR if your signal is strong on your adapters end, you could always upgrade to a different wireless adapter that can handle faster conections.
You can get this one its WRT300N this a router that uses the latest wireless N technology which means a wider range and faster speed but using this router in order for you ro use the wireless N technology you may need a wireless N adapter also on your computers. But if you want since you already have a existing wireless network juts get a wireless range expander to repeat the signal of the router so it will reach your XBOX this is the model WRE54G.
