The geek squad said the cp has a problem with the mother board and the hard drive, the computer turns on but the screen is just all black, you can hear the fan turn on though, they said it was better to just buy a new computer than to fix it so i did, but please let me know what the comupter and the battery charger together would be worth...

IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO DO. IF YOU CAN TURN A SCREWDRIVER AND READ YOU CAN REPLACE A HARD DRIVE. ANYONE CAN, MY GRANDMOTHER CAN. JUST WATCH IN VIDEOS. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT IF YOU WANT SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU USE A WELL KNOWN LOCAL COMPUTER SHOP THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS. SOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST NOT TO RIP YOU OFF. FRANKLY I FIND GEEK SQUAD HAS A VERY POOR REPUTATION, OR AT LEAST I GET ALOT OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THEM. CALL AROUND YOUR LOCAL COMPUTER SHOPS. KEEP THE BUSINESS LOCAL. GOOD LUCK.
As you said that you haven't used the computer for long time then it could be the motherboard which has gone faulty not the HDD or DVD. Try to use the new HDD with this old motherboard. Or else you can seek help of Any Geek Squad or computer vendor.
In case if you have any more trouble do contact back in Fixya. Thank you
Please let us know what errors you have by reposting each individual one when they occur. Don't pay Geek Squad, they just come up with something to change like a motherboard and such when it makes no sense to do so at all.
If you do not want to repair the laptop, you can remove the hard drive from the laptop and put the hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive. To free up disk space on this hard drive, just delete the Windows folder and programs off this hard drive and just leave your data files.
I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive.
For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.
Go back to best buy. the closest one to you. and see about yoru exteneded warranty.
