To reset the combination on a Sentry safe, open the door of the safe, delete the existing codes, press the PROG or P key and enter the factory code. Finally, enter a new five-digit number as per individual preference, which is the new user combination.
It is always prudent to reset the combination on a Sentry safe when the door is open because it prevents the user from being locked out. To open the Sentry safe door, type the five-digit factory code given in the owner's manual. This factory code cannot be altered.
To delete the existing codes on newer models of the safe as of 2015, press the P button. Then, type the factory code and follow it up by inputting "00000" into the safe. On older models of the Sentry safe, press the PROG button and type the factory code two times.
After deleting the existing codes, press the PROG or P key and then enter the factory code once again. Within five seconds, type a new five-digit number, which is the new user code. To verify if the user code is working, retype it and then close the door of the safe. The user code is the primary code for opening the safe, and users can reset it as often as they want too
You must call (800) 828-1438 for combination retreivals.
If you need your combination, you must send a notarized letter stating you are the owner of the safe. (Note: the owner\'s last name must be different from that of the notary public). For locations that require a raised notary seal, use a pencil to shade the seal to insure that it is visible.
The notarized letter needs to include:
Your name, address and phone number.
The model number and serial number from your safe. The serial number is typically found on the front of the door, lower right corner on a small sticker; the right outside wall of your safe; or under the keypad/dial on the front of safe.
Please indicate how you would like to receive your combination. Options include first class mail, e-mail or fax. Your letter must clearly indicate which method you are choosing to receive your combination, as well as the mailing address, e-mail address, or fax number to which it should be sent. Note that failure to indicate the method in which your combination should be returned to you will result in delays to the process.
In the event you need to open the safe after the owner is deceased, your notarized letter will also need to include that you are now the owner or executor of the estate and need access to the safe. You must also include a copy of the ***** certificate.
If you hold Power of Attorney for the safe owner and need to access the safe, your notarized letter will also need to include that you are acting on behalf of the safe owner. You will need to include a complete copy of the Power of Attorney documentation to confirm that you have the authorization to act on their behalf in this type of circumstance.
If you also need a key for your safe, you can order them online:

Locksmiths agree If your safe doesn't have a key, skip Step 3. Turn the dial to zero. Insert your sentry safe key and turn it until the plunger pops out. Turn the dial to the left (counterclockwise) three times to the first number of the combination (pass the first number of your combination two times, stopping on it the third time). Turn the dial to the right (clockwise) two times to the second number of the combination (pass your second number once, stopping on it the second time). Turn the dial to the left to the last number (stop the first time on your last number). Pull the handle down; cracking the Fireproof Sentry Safe open.

A Safe and Vault Tech Will confirm that once you change the batteries the user code will erase and you will now have to enter the factory default that is in the owners manual and then use the programing instructions to program a new user code.
I had the same problem with my Sentry S3877. I found the exact 4-battery replacement (with snap attachment on top!) at an online electronics.retailer, but had to purchase a lot of three. I don't need the other two, so I'll sell them for just $6 each to the first two folks to contact me firstname.lastname@example.org.
Oh, by the way, once the batteries went dead, you lost your combination! When you pop the new battery compartment in, the factory default combination will be in effect. That default combination is in your user's manual. I'm currently searching frantically for mine! Gee, how could I have misplaced it ... I just had it in my hands when I purchased the safe 10 years ago !!!
