Problem with Inspiron 530S Desktop Reading CD's

Alright. I own a 530S Inspiron Desktop, it contains one CD/DVD drive. As of late, however, this drive has had a number of problems reading CD's, a variety of Cd's too. It will sometimes read software, sometimes not. Sometimes read music CD's, sometimes not. It will NOT read blank CD's, however, and so I cannot burn my music. This problem has happened on a number of computers I own, so there must be something I'm always doing wrong on these computers, either through way of a virus...or something else. Just now, I was able to install a program, but once I insert another software CD, it refuses to read it. When I open up 'My Computer' and double click the drive, it ejects and asks me to put a CD in.

What version of Windows do you have and do you use the same windows version in all the PC that you tried to use a CD/DVD combo on ? Are you using the same CD/DVD device to install on different computers or are these all different drives ? And have you ever successfully burn any CD from this devices ?

If your computers are relatively old then they may not be able to burn CD's or read CD's that were burned. A new CD/DVD burner is relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

This might take a little bit of patience on your part, here we go..
right click 'my computer'
select 'manage'
on the left click 'device manager'
on the right locate your 'cd drive'
click it to highlight it
select disable and if prompted, select 'yes'
than click 'check for new hardware

and windows should see the drive an 'reinstall it' to your computer.

I am not promising this well resolve your problem, but it is the first step you should take. I hope this works for you, let me know how it goes.

The most common cause of this problem is a dirty lens and/or dirty or scratched CDs or DVDs. Try a DVD player cleaning kit as well as checking each disk for fingerprints, smudges, debris, or scratches. If they are in pretty bad shape, a lot of game stores offer a "resurfacing" treatment for $3 to $5 per disk (cost and availability may vary in your area).

Do you get a screen if you boot from the CD/DVD drive using the Windows installation CD/DVD disc. If not, you probably dis-lodged
a cable or plug when installing the drive.

HI,
If the drive was working fine earlier , and has suddenly quit working , Remove all media from the drive. Download and run the following patch from micorsoft . If it doesnot fix the issue the dirve would have to replaced.

Microsoft Fixit

Once you are on the above link. click on the green button that says run now.

Go to "My Computer" - this should be an icon on the desktop. Right click on the icon. Choose "Properties." Click on the Hardware tab. Click the "Device Manager" button. Navigate to the "DVD/CD-ROM" drives + sign. Click on the plus sign. Read about your hardware.

DVD drive will not respond to any form of media inserted into the drive. My computer is a Dell inspiron 530s. I'm running Windows XP

did you install the driver of your motherboard?if so,you need to download and install the dvd decoder for your media from the manufacturers site. if you cannot play even cd, the problem is in your dvd drive.if your dvd drive comes with a driver then you have to install it.actually there are more solutions to your problem try follow the solution I've mention first, and if its still not working post your reply and i will give you another solution.
