Question about Toshiba 46HM95 46" HDTV

1 Answer

Black Box My Tv screen all of a sudden posted a black box across the lower middle of the screen. From the manual, I assumed this is a captioning issue and attempted to follow the steps to turn off captioning (of course I never turned it on, but whatever). This is not a cable issue, because the same problem occurs whether the input is set to the DVD, or to other inputs (Xbox). When I hit the menu button, the menu options appear, but I have no control over the cursor or the selector. All it allows me to do is to select the presently lit feature (picture quality and settings) and modify that. When the menu is closed, the image of the tv is whole for about a second, then the black box appears again. Perhaps on a related issue, for a few months now I have noticed that the captioning will turn on, and gibberish will begin to appear at the bottom of the screen. I've been able to easily get rid of that just by turning on the menu and off again with minimal annoyance. My guess is that the problem is with the operating system, or whatever controls the functions of the television, but I have no knowledge of televisions, so I am just guessing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Black Box

Hi Krautner, We have a Toshiba and experienced the same problem this morning. It is very similar to your symptoms: big black box in centre-lower part of screen. It sometimes disappears momentarily when you select a feature such a "mute" for the same amount of time the screen displays that function. Once the "mute" signal disappears, the black box comes on again. I fixed the problem by turning off the close captioning function. Somehow, it had actually got switched on. It runs fine now. I suppose you have already found a fix since you posted back in May....but hopefully this helps you or someone else putting in a similar search for this fix. Cheers Geo

Black box in middle of tv screen

This is a background for text, even though you aren't seeing any text at the time. Since it covers most of the screen, it sounds more like a demo mode screen than closed captioning. Go into your setup menu and make sure that neither of those is selected. If necessary, restore the factory settings. I'm assuming that this is coming from the tv itself, and that you don't have a VCR, Tivo, etc. Good luck!

Can't get rid of black box

You have your TV in the "Teletext" mode. Go into the TV menu and select the closed-captioning menu and turn off the text function. What you are seeing is the result of the TV's captioning circuit latching onto a false text pilot signal and then throwing up the black box on the screen.

My parent's JVC did this as well. It took us a little while to solve it (and through searching for how to fix it, found this post).

Using the JVC's remote control, we pushed the C.C. (closed caption) button and cycled to the "OFF" setting. That fixed it. Using the TV's front panel setting did not fix the issue, we had to use the remote control.

Note: the "text" CC setting re-displays the black box.

Large Black Box Showing up in middle of screen.

When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. When the closed captions are set to CC1, it puts the words on the screen and when set to TEXT it puts a black box in the center of the screen. Go into the set's menu, navigate to the closed captions page and set the captions to OFF.
