KP-61HS10 Convergence IC Replacement

I would like to replace the STK392-560 convergence IC's on my Sony KP-61HS10 rear projection TV. I have electronic repair experience, but have never worked on TV's. I have identified the components to be replaced. I am aprehensive to start without educating myself about the possibility of electical discharge. I've downloaded the Service Manual and searched the web, but was unable to find the answers to the following questions.

Do projection TV's hold dangerously high charges similar to CRT TV's when they are powered down and unplugged? If so, what is the proper discharge procedure?

Hi JWC1,
Yes, there are dangerous voltages present. However, Sony has designed the product so that these voltage levels discharge quickly after powering down and unplugging. Care must be taken when disassembling the board for removal. Mark connectors when unplugging them. Remove all screws holding board in place. Disconnect thick red wire going from the flyback to the HV block by pushing back the boot and pushing the lead inward and turning simultaneously. This unlatches the connection to the high voltage block. The thin red wire from the flyback to the front loosen from tie downs (not necessary to disconnect/plenty of wire length). Not necessary to unsolder the heat sinks from the ICs. After bad IC removal, line up the leads on the new ICs and use patience to insert into the holes. Once you get an IC leads through, hold IC in place and screw back to the heat sinks before soldering. If convergence does not improve, check for open pico fuses. They look like resistors and have an amperage rating silk screened on the PCB.

Yes they can hold a bit of voltage so a high voltage probe will discharge them nicely, something you might not have but can get from ebay if you are going to do this alot. you don't need to be concerned about this though as you won't be doing anything with them so don't touch..
just be carefull when desoldering these stk's use solder wick and patience even a pro can take an hour to desolder these so be carefull not to lift the trace or the situation will quickly get worse. don't adjust these tubes as they are set to the correct alignment already.

Tv looks like the edegs curve and is blury

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Sounds like the convergence ic's need to be replaced or resoldered. Sometimes it can be a microfuse if you are lucky. But my question is if you hit the focus button up front does it make it thru the auto convergence? Let me know. Have a good one.

Sony tv KP-61HS10 lenses wont align

This is common in those sets. One of your convergence IC's has stopped working and needs to be replaced. The convergence IC should be replaced and the convergence circuits realigned by someone with experience in Sony projection sets.
