I've tried your first solution to find the drive letter which is F. It gives me the same error message "Error performing inpage operation"

I've tried 3 different PC's with the same outcome, unfortunately :-(

I called HP too and the warranty is valid but they advised formatting the drive, I really don't want to consider this as we have too many photo's that I want to recover if possible.

I can make myself available almost anytime, I'm in Sydney Australia, so depending on where you are we can sort the best time to suit both of us.

Big thanks Niko you are my hero and have saved my life. The beers are on me if you ever get to Sydney.

Press start -> then run -> type in cmd

in the cmd window type in CHKDSK /F /X driveletter:

you need to find the driveletter by going to my computer and see what letter the drive is for example G: you would enter CHKDSK /F /X G:

report back how it goes.

You need to format the disk ....

The drives can be read by another computer, so the problem is most likely with OS/drivers on the HP giving the error. The specific drivers required to read each drive format could be missing/corrupt. Formatting shouldn't be performed on a drive that contains data unless backed up (redundantly). It may be possible to recover any lost data using free recovery software. Often a format preserves data, erases only the file directory.

I would try a system restore on the HP. If that fails to correct it install or upgrade format specific drivers (e.g. SD/SDXC drivers). Contact Magellan about the GPS: you may have formatted the device's system partition. It is unlikely your computer had the correct drivers to format that device, and it is likely formatted in an incompatible format (such as NTFS). Does Magellan provide a utility to read the device's memory? The SD card should be salvageable by formatting on another computer using the appropriate formatting utility. (Go to and navigate to their formatting utility.)

From that site: "If an SDXC memory card is used through the direct SD slot of a computer without SDXC driver installation, the card may not be recognized correctly and a message to prompt formatting may appear. In this case, do not format the SDXC memory card. It may erase the data on the SDXC memory card and format the card for a different file system, making it incompatible with SDXC devices."

Most likely your hard drive has died, taking all your data with it. Nothing you can do to fix that apart buying a new hard drive and reinstalling Windows on it.

Hi, HP Pocket Media drives work like regutalr external hard drives, in fact, the bring an usb cable so you can connect it to any computer, not just HPs with the media bay. Are you using the HP bay or the USB cable? Regardless, after you connect the hard drive and go to my computer and see if it shows up. If it does, just select the files and do a copy and paste to the new hard drive. I dont know if you are having problems with the software it might have or the fact that it doesnt show up on the computer, but like I said you would handle it like a regular hard drive. I hope this helsp

The stick is dead as a dodo, the data is gone. Next time remember that a USB memory stick ages every time you put some data on it so it wears out very quickly. so it should never be used to carry data that hasn't been backed-up on another media.
