Question about Fiskars Brands Computers & Internet

Open Question

I have a 1988 Fiskars UPS 1.5 and I need the service manual.

I am pretty sure the battery's are bad but I want to install an external battery and just use it as a remote power supply without charging the battery with the device. I have a source of 12 or 24vdc power and just need clean 120Vac to use with other devices. I don't have much of a budget and we are in need of a cheap power source.

I have the same PCB on my Deltec PRR2200i. I at least know a few things about the circuit now. I had 11 transistors explode on mine and am replacing them now. Sadly I have not managed to track down a circuit diagram.

What if I don't replace the battery? What happens?

Have you ever let AA batteries sit inside of your tv remote control and forget about changing them... then find out that you really need that remote but when you go to replace the batteries you find a mess because the batteries were wayyyyy past their life cycle?? That's pretty much the same thing that's going to happen except on a bigger scale. I can't answer this question and say that nothing bad will happen (sometimes a bad battery with a lot of current provided to it will get so hot that it will explode!) but more than likely -- no. These units are designed as an offline UPS (you can read more here: so there will not be steady current going through the battery all of the time.

My sincere advice - if you're done with the UPS then unplug it from the wall and recycle the battery; then you can store your UPS for later use. Remember, it's against the law to throw batteries away, you must recycle them! Well... in the States anyway.

If you would like pricing on a new UPS, we can offer pricing better than any big box store (walmart, bestbuy, etc...). Contact me whenever & in whichever way is easiest for you:

Computer wont start, despite all components working, cpu looks corroded

Usually you diagnose these by process of elimination. Get down to the bare bone mobo without anything but the processor, good RAM (switch out if you can with different ones), and Power Supply. Eliminate everything else, no cd, no floppy, no hdd, no video cards, no sound cards, no cards at all really.

More than likely it's a bad power supply. Take the power supply to your local computer shop and they should test it for you for free... don't let them charge you for it. If it's good then test the cpu.

Hope this helps :)

Backup power ends quickly even with new battery

What is the load on the unit? How old is it?

The symptom can occur if the load is too large. It will also happen when the unit reaches a certain age.

I've found that the low-end consumer UPS's should be replaced when the battery fails. The charging circuitry usually fails to charge the battery even with a new battery soon after the replacement.

The way I check if the battery or the UPS charging system has failed is with a voltmeter to give the current voltage and a variable DC power supply (whatever is appropriate for the battery) to attempt to charge the battery. I can watch the battery discharge with an oscilliscope if I want a full trace of the unit.) Charge the battery fully then watch the unit over time. If the battery itself is bad, you won't get the full charge or it will discharge as soon as it is removed from the power supply.

I hope this helps.

I have MGE pulsar extreme 3200c and I wanted to know that what is the Max battery size (Ah) I can use with it to get Maximum backup time for several hours. Thank you Azam Latif

Hi, I have this ups as well, My personal adjustment with this ups, is I have installed 6 external Ags Number 120, 15 plates per battery, in pairs. And its working fine on my end , and yes ups is able to charge them all without over charging or any other problems. My ups Already has 6 internal batteries bank installed, attaching these external batteries has increased the backup time.

Thank You.

I cant charge mine. it keeps making a beep

Two possibilities come to mind. 1) The battery has failed and can't be charged fully (usually one cell fails and it won't charge fully). I've diagnosed this by removing the battery and trying to charge it with a variable power supply. You can try replacing the battery.
2) The UPS itself is faulty and can't charge/maintain the battery. The entire unit should be replaced.

I recommend solution 2. I had the 725VA in this consumer UPS line and when I replaced the battery, the UPS could not keep the battery charged with any load on the unit.

Check your warranty, though. The APC warranty is for 2 years on this model.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I bought a 1500va APC UPS. Its not charging when connected to the mains power supply. It still beeps and stays on battery. I have set up the transfer voltage and sensitivity adjustment to no avail....

Hi, I am a licensed Master Electrician with 27 years exp.
Need more info. Did it work before? Are you positive your incoming voltage is correct? I will assume all of them things as yes and see what I can think of to fix ya up.
I would connect it to a load and let the batteries totally deplete, like a small drill or something that pulls close to the 12.5vac (1500va). Disconnect the load and unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and then see if it charges. If it does, leave it alone til it completes charging then put a load on it. It shouldnt charge with a load on it if the battery is already fully charged. Then unplug it from the wall receptacle (main power) and see if it transfers and the batteries take over. If it does it should not charge again. A UPC should only charge when your load is being supplied by the main power, i.e., the UPS is plugged in and not transferred to the battery state.
I hope I have helped with what info I had, if not then get back with me, their are other issues, like internal fusing on the main power supply coming in as well as battery charger internal fusing. NOTE: If you ever replace an internal fuse on a UPS be absolutely sure, without a doubt that it is of the same type as in voltage, ac or dc, and most importantly the amp rating. BTW in case you didn't know, to get the amp rating of something rated in VA, as in 1500va, you divide 1500 (the va) by 120v. (supply voltage) that is assuming it is 120v. if any other voltage just adjust your divisor to match the voltage. 1500va/120v = 12.5 amps. Good luck!
