Re: black going through the screen
It sounds like the LED picture plate has been damaged, like it was either dropped, got liquid in it or stepped on. There isn't much that can be done to repair these. You can try to carefully remove the plate-it sits on 2 rubber looking strips, and clean things up with alcohol. Put it back together and if all goes well it will work.

If you just purchased the unit then most likely it is still under either the store's warranty or the manufacturer's warranty. I would return it right away and get a replacement. It should NOT be behaving this way brand new.
By putting the case together you've short circuit the black wire with the powerconnector. Open the bottom case and check the wire. Check Fuses F1 and F2. 99,9% change that one of them is blown out. Replacements can be found on the Internet
I'm not to familiar with the DS's but i beleive that is how they are supposed to boot if a cartridge is already in the unit. If not then there may be an option when booting without a cartridge where you can change the settings so that it will boot to the main DS screen before booting the game. I would check this first then seek further help from a more adequate expert on here.
If it altered the selected language in the game too, there should be a option in the game where you should be able to change the language. In most games at start up there is usually a menu screen where you can select:" new game, options, continue,(it sometimes might vary)" Language settings (if any at all) are usually found in "game options."
Exactly what game is this problem on? I'm assuming that since your daughter changed the language, that she knows how to go back to the DS configuration settings to select the language. If that is the area of information that you did need though, You can post another comment here asking that.
