It will not release until the oven cools. If it is cooled and still won't release unplug the range or shut down the circuit breaker that controls it for 30 minutes then power it back up and that should reset it and the latch will release.

Oven door latch will not release so that I can open the door

Try jiggling the door by the handle. Jiggle it hard, both sideways, in/out and up/down. The little piece in there that releases the door may just be stuck, and didn't move quite far enough to let the door open. These things happen.

I interrupted the cleaning cycle accidentally. The door opened after cooling, and then I tried to restart the cleaning, but now the locking latch is in the lock position with the oven door open. How can we...

First make sure that you wait long enough before you try. If it has not cooled completely it will not release the lock from the lock position. Sometimes if you cycle the power to your oven off and then on again you can reset the oven and the switch may relax, but in your case you may have to lightly pry the latch assembly to the open position. Turn off the breaker to your oven for a good minute or two before reapplying the power again.

If this fails to work then check your manual for instructions or to get a factory service number. They should be able to give you the information you need to open your oven.

The lock will not release after cleaning

This is GE's trouble shooting advise:

Range - Oven Door Won't Unlock After Self Clean

The Oven Door has been Locked Accidentally:

  • If no food or utensils are in oven, put it into a short self-clean cycle (1-2 hours).

  • If there is food in the oven, let the oven cool to room temperature and try to unlatch the door.

  • With electronic ranges there is a small chance that turning the circuit breaker off for a few minutes and turning it back on can release the door. latch to the "off"

  • Note: Do not force the latch at anytime!

Door Will Not Unlock After Cleaning:

On models with mechanical latches:
  • Once the oven is cool after a self-clean cycle (approximately 30-90 minutes), slide the latch over to the left.(Some older models have a latch release button that must be pushed in while sliding the latch over.)
Note: Some models with oven Set and Temperature knobs must have those knobs set in the Clean position before the latch can be moved to the left. If your door won't unlock, try turning those knobs back to Clean, then slide the latch over.

If the above suggestions do not work try the following to unlock your door:
  1. Disconnect power to range for 30 seconds.
  2. Reconnect power and see if door will unlatch.
  3. If door does not unlatch, and you do have food in the oven, wait for oven to cool completely and try again. If it still will not open you will need service.
  4. If door does not unlatch, and you do not have food in the oven, set the oven up to clean for 1-2 hours.
  5. Wait approximately 30 minutes and try to unlock the door.
  6. If the door unlocks, the control has reset itself and there should not be any other problems.
  7. If the door will not unlock or if you would like to schedule a service appointment, please contact GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737 or schedule a service appointment on-line.
Note: Under no circumstances should you ever force the door or latch open.

Self cleaning oven won't unlock after cycle is complete

Unplug it for about 30 minutes, plug it back in and see if it unlocks. If not, then the latch, interlocking microswitch or control board is faulty. Also look for any bad connections (make suer the power is off before you start wiggling connections).
