You can turn off the 'Optimum Start'. See MoneySavingExpert website for instructions posted there by Honeywell as to how to do it.

Honeywell HZ-338 thermostat problem

See if there is a little brass-looking bulb on a wire (sensing bulb) inside that can be moved away from the heat. My other thought would be maybe there is supposed to be some insulation between the control unit and the heating element that was inadvertently discarded?

Here is a simple way to tell. Remove your thermostat from it's mounting plate, locate the wiring, the red and white are low voltage control wires. Disconnect them from the base and join the two together if the furnace runs you need a thermostat if not it is in the controls to the furnace.

I would switch to a two wire heating only stat It sounds to me like they have the boiler wired into cooling side. Do you also have to set switch on your t-stat to cooling or leave it on heating. Just curious. I would still go with two wire stat. Thanks.

Solid fuel stove linked to oilsystem with two zone

Put a temperature operated control (aquastat) on the piping of the wood stove so that if it is on, it will interupt the circuit wired to the oil burner at the X&X terminals of the boiler control. As the wood stove cools off, it will close the connection allowing the oil system to fire.

Temperature fluctuates

Actually that thermostat is adjustable for only +/- 1 degree. I would make sure it is located close to a radiator/register, whichever you have, to help close that 8 degree variance. The thing about hot water heat is that even when the boiler shuts down those radiators are still putting off heat, so the temp can still shoot up a few more degrees after the stat has been satisfied. Is the boiler shutting down when the stat hits 71* ? If not then the stat may be bad. Honeywell carries a 5 year replacement warranty on that stat. I use the Honeywell Focus stats in almost all my installations. They are a very dependable thermostat. Feel free to ask anything else that will help solve your problem...Rob
