Question about HP Photosmart C5580 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I am not getting 100 draft copies per cartridge.

I have a HP Photoshart C5580 copier. I am using black 74. I'm having to replace the cartridge after making about 60 - 70 draft copies (text). For my needs, I do not print on normal. Yet, on the cartridge box, it claims that I should be able to make at least 200 pages. Most of my copies do not contain a complete page full of text. I have not attempted to print prints. I usually need to print at least 60 copies a day. That means I will need a new cartridge EVERYDAY. What am I doing wrong?

Purchase the 74XL cartridge for 3x the prints. You may want to consider a different printer or laser printer for more cost effective prints and reliability as your printer will most likely wear out before you want with that quantity of printing.

How do I print in grayscale.I do not get the option in print menu

With respect to color usage during greyscale printing: Unfortunately, with many of the newer inkjet printer models & printer drivers, printing in greyscale actually consumes more color ink than normal draft printing. If you wish to save on color ink, it is suggested to do one of the following as available in your specific printer driver/software:
-Print in Normal - Draft mode (or super draft if available), plain paper.
-Print in Black & White mode only* - Draft mode on plain paper (typically this is the best way to save on ink/printing costs).
-For internet page printing, print using CleanPrint (3rd party software for printing most internet-based content from all major internet browsers. NOTE: not affiliated with Inkjet411): http://www.formatdynamics.com/cleanprint-4-0/
-Keep printer on at all times; power up cycles typically consume large amounts of ink (per Consumer Reports, Aug 2013 issue).

    * Most printer models will still consume a small percentage of color ink due to normal ink/printer maintenance, such as between job 'spitting'. The purpose is to ensure the printhead is maintained to avoid clogging.

Regarding HP 74, 75, 74XL or 75XL repurchase or ink cartridge refilling, if you unable to find a retail / refill store close to you and you are trying to cut ink costs, may we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA, have a high reliability rating, come with a 1-year warranty and provide free shipping for all orders above $20 (available to US residents only).

HP 722C has quit printing black in color draft

WORKAROUND: Select EconoFast or Draft as the print quality setting in the printer properties. This will prevent the color cartridge from being used. - Or - Try another color cartridge. The color cartridge is used to print grayscale images in Normal or Best print modes, so if one color has run out, the printout will have the wrong tint. With a full color cartridge, the colors can be properly combined to create a composite black. CAUSE: When printing with Normal or Best as the print quality setting, the HP Deskjet 710C or 720C or 722C series printer will use the color ink to improve print quality output, even when printing a grayscale image.

I have a hp photosmart C5580 that after accepting generic ink cartridges all of a sudden won't accept them. They were working 24 hours ago. How can I get it to accept them. I can't afford the HP ones...

When you say generic cartridges, are you referring to 'compatibles' that you purchased on-line? If so, you are rolling the dice with those since often they can easily suffer internal micro-electronic malfunctions - sorry no money back guarantee with those. It is suggested you purchase new HP OEM (genuine) cartridges, use them and then go get them refilled at either Costco (most USA/Canada locations) or Fry's Electronics (all locations)...you'll save ~50% on the cost when refilling. Anything goes wrong you can bring them back. :-)

With respect to your current 'generic' cartridge problem, you can validate the HP74/75 cartridge's electrical health by running the 'Tap 41' diagnostics test report. Refer to video procedure on how to activate and read the service test report for your C5580 printer: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=536

1. Load Letter/A4-size paper into paper feed tray.
2. If any lights are blinking, first press Cancel to attempt to clear.
3. Press and HOLD the Cancel button, press Ok button once.
4. At 'Mfg Commands' menu, click Right Arrow once until 'uiaux service' menu is displayed.
5. At 'uiaux service' menu, click the Right Arrow until Special Reports menu is displayed.
6. Select Ok, then click Right Arrow until the 'print-mech button tap' menu is displayed.
7. Select Ok (Code = 0 will be displayed); click and hold Right Arrow until 'code = 41' is displayed. Use the Left Arrow if you need to decrease numerical count.
8. Select Ok. Within one minute the Tap 41 diagnostic test report should be initiated and print (whether ink cartridges are good or not, i.e. this is a forced print test). See following 4 paragraphs (or video) on how to interpret diagnostic report.....

--- Providing the color cartridge is partially functioning the Tap 41 diagnostic test print will be printed (this is a forced service print test which is mainly used for the evaluation of ink cartridge electrical health). A good HP 75/75XL color cartridge should display 600 good nozzles, while a good HP 74/74XL black ink cartridge should show 672 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to video on how to read the printout.

Just installed refilled black ink cartridge on hp

By using refilled cartridges you will always have this problem. Each cartridge has a chip that lets the printer know when it is full or empty. By pressing the ok button you may be able to clear this message. However, most of the time you can still be able to print and ignore the message.

Photosmart C5280. Instructions on photo cartridge 348 say remove both black and colour cartridges, then install photo cartridge in right hand cartridge holder. Printer screen then tells me to install...

Your printer uses the following cartridges:

HP 74 - Black ink
HP 75 - Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow ink
HP 99 - Photo Black, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta

You need Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta to print photos. To accomplish this you install the HP 99 photo cartridge where your HP 74 black cartridge usually goes and you keep the HP 75 color cartridge where it's at. I don't know why your printer told you to remove both cartridges, then reinstall the HP 75 color cartridge.

Won't scan, copy, or fax

You need to change the ink cartridge, the fact that it prints in fast draft is because it does not use as much ink to print as normal letter quality.

Refilling ink cartridges

hp74a.jpg HP #74 Cartridge Refill Instructions
Black cartridge

Instructions
1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
2. Peal off the top label. hp74b.jpg
3. Fill the syringe with 20ml. of black ink.
4. Very S-L-O-W-L-Y inject ink into any hole (they all go to the same sponge, HP just used the same color mold for the black ink cartridges).
5. When finished, replace the top label or leave it off (it will make no difference in the printing).
6. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions.
Or print the following pages:
http://www.refillinstructions.com/black.htm for Black

For best results, leave cartridge in printer for 8 hours after refilling so the ink can saturate the entire sponge.
A Refill Kit should include Ink plus the following:
One 30cc Syringe
