I'm not a computer expert and bought the Lifecam without realizing it doesn't automatically work with Skype. Can someone tell me how I can make it work with Skype or should I just return it and get another webcam.
Many thanks.
I had the same problem with Lifecam VX3000 on Vista, and tried all the remedies everyone suggested online, including upgrades to driver, software, and DirectX. I even went out and bought a new webcam by a different manufacturer.
Turns out the answer was simpler. DON'T turn on the Lifecam software before you start Skype!
If you do, Skype thinks that "another program" is using the webcam. Open Skype alone; it will find the webcam and turn it on. Now I can chat with our little grandson in Kuala Lumpur. Hope this helps.
BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD ANYTHING, TRY THIS:
I was having the same problem .. then I went in to Tools > Options > General Settings > Video Settings > open the drop down menu on the right that reads: Select Webcam
... and make sure that 'Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 (or whatever your camera is) is selected.
That should fix things up for you.
Good Luck.
Hey,
you can get the software from
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=ICE

Let me know if you need anything else.
Thanks,

See section A. Skype in the info below to setup the Audio & Video.
Also send this to your family and friends so they have their computer setup properly.
Web Camera's have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.
Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.
A. Skype Setup:
After downloading and installing Skype
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/windows/beta/downloading/
set it up as follows:
Go to Tools, then Options, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
Then click on the Video Settings.
The camera, if Installed Properly, it will come up and show a video picture.
Then, on the bottom of the page click save.
The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now be able to see and hear you.
B. Yahoo Setup:
After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger
http://www.soft32.com/download_30.HTML
set it up as follows:
Go to Messenger at the top left and click on it.
Next go down to Preferences and click on it.
Next Calling and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
Next go to the Test Audio section and (in blue writing) click on "Open the call setup assistant" and follow the instructions on the left window.
C. Windows Live Messenger:
http://download.live.com/Messenger
After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on " "Show Menus." And then click on "Show the Menu Bar".
Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on " "Action."
Go to "TOOLS" and click "Audio and Video Setting" and follow the instructions.
NOTE: Your audio and video should work. Enjoy.
When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
D. AIM (AOL) Messenger:
http://dashboard.aim.com/aim
On the VIM sign-in window click on Edit.
Then click on Settings Enhanced IM.
Next click on Enhanced IM.
Then click on Audio Video.
The Audio and Video portion has drop downs so you can select the proper audio card and video camera installed in you computer.
The Audi Video drop downs are
Microphone
Speaker
Camera
The audio and camera should function now.
Additional information to use with VIM settings.

Hope this helps. Bud
If you're only using the webcam for Skype (as I do), then you can simply get rid of the Lifecam folder and all its applications (in the C: programs folder). The LifeCam program and Skype interfere with one another because each is trying to take control over the camera. But the LifeCam works perfectly fine with Skype running it and without any of its applications. To try it, just send your LifeCam folder to the Recycling Bin and then open Skype. You may need to adjust your video and audio settings. If this DOESN'T work, then simply reinstate the folder to its proper place. But as I said, it works fine on my XP system.

You are right...the box does not say it is compatible with Skype. I guess this needs to be retruned. Are you aware of certain inexpensive webcams that are compatible with Skype?
When the call starts , it starts the video & sound but after a few mins may be 5 min , the image freezes and the sounds cannot be herad at the other end
I bought this webcam and it seems to work fine when I open the LifeCam and settings are ok but when I go on to skype it doesn't work at all and just shows a black screen, it says on the box that 'Basic audio and functionality with Windows Live Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, SKYPE, and Microsoft Office Communicator'... Is there something I need to change on the settings in Skype? or is it a dud and need to be returned?...
My daughter purchased the wife and I a MS LifeCam VX-5000. Test with Skype worked except the microphone. I plugged in a mike and all test worked okay. My computer system is a Sony PCG-FRV37 Pentium 4 32 Bit SP3. We tried to initiate calls tonight and she could see and hear me. I could see myself but could not see them. The system would also freeze after a period of time, always different lengths of time. This was frustrating as it required a hard power off and cold boot. I later discovered the right click function on the webcam icon that allows one to sent to Skype but this did not stop either problem, it added one. They would lose video of me.
On the box does it say whether it is compatible with skype as most microsoft webcams only work with windows live messenger/call
