Hi dcimproveman, most common noise on whirlpool/kenmore dryers are the rollers.i would describe that noise as a klunk,klunk.klunk.what you do is unplug unit, pop the top, take off the frount, loose belt and remove drum.takes me less than 5 min.clean inspect/oil /no wd-40 replace worn parts as needed.if you get stuck, just send an email

Kenmore he2 dryer is makinga loud noice when drying clothes

Hi Ralph Romero

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like the drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication, or maybe your drum belt has slipped off of the idler arm pulley.

Note: This method works with most front loading machines.

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer if you have to.
Note: Some tops hinge and tilt backwards so they do not have to be removed and the electrical console with stay with the lid.
Also remove the lint filter and the screws holding the lint filter housing in place.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer by removing two screws located on either side of the top of the dryer housing and unplug the door switch.
This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor. Now is a good time to replace the front felt seal on the drum if it needs to be replaced. Be sure to use a good grade of weatherproof cement on the seal to glue it to the drum, sometimes the glue is furnished with the seal.
Now is also a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots or wear they will make a thumping type of noise.
If your drum rollers have too much wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them and are only squeeling then they probably only need lubrication.
Remove the rollers and clean the shafts that the roller rolls on, remove any hair, dust, etc from roller and shaft.
Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil, or a light lubricant like Vaseline.
Reassemble the dryer.
Plug back into your electrical receptical.
This should solve your noise problem.

My Kenmore 80 series dryer seems to operate normally, except for a horrible "burnt chemical" smell in the dryed clothes. It almost smells like the gas is not exhausting correctly. Could it be the...

A lot of time a chemical smell is the result of blown capacity where the electrolitic is leaking out. Large caps are used in the moter start circuit and are usually located close to the motor. After awhile there will be an impact on the motor starting and the performance of your machine.

If it is the belt slipping you would get a burnt oil smell. If it was the blower motor or the drive motor it would be more of an electrical smell - burnt plastic type.

Loud noices when running, some burned rubber smell

The only rubber part is the belt that drives the drum around. The belt rides on a tensioner which has a pulley on it with a bearing built into it. When the bearing goes bad the pulley will not turn freely causing the belt to get hot and smell. Its time for a new pully and bearing assembly for your dryer

Kenmore gas dryer made a loud buzzing sound and didn't start. I smelled burnt rubber smell. Dryer is totally unresponsive now. Breaker is ok, power is on.

Sounds like the belt has burned and broken. There is a switch on the tensioner that will not let the motor run if the belt breaks.

Fabric looking belt came out of dryer. when i try to dry clothes it makes a loud noise and smells like something is burning and my clothes get twisted. how do i fix it? I have a kenmore 70 series dryer

Stop using your dryer in its current condition. That fabric looking felt is probably your drum seal. They commonly wear out. I will need your dryer model number in order to confirm how your dryer is configured and give you accurate advice on part numbers and directions on how to replace. The model number should be listed on a name plate around the door opening.
