How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware If you cannot boot the ThinkPad, you will have to reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware. If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password. Power off the computer Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit. Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed. Reinstall the DIMM cover. If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords: Power on the computer by pressing and holding F1. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears. Click on the Password icon. Click on the Power on icon. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar. Press Enter twice. Click on Exit; then click on Restart.

SOURCE: IBM Thinkpad t40 black screen

Chips DO get loose and what you're experiencing is a common problem with IBM T40's. The solder that holds the graphics processor to the motherboard is cracked and no longre consistantly makes a good connection. This problem can only permanently be resolved with a new motherboard, or reflowing the solder of the GPU chip on the old one with a heat gun. Do a search for "thinkpad solder reflow" in any search engine.

Good luck.

SOURCE: IBM thinkpad turns on but screen stays black!!!!!

It probably has a dead backlight. If you have an external monitor, plug it in. fn + F7 will mirror it's screen.

There is no problem in your motherboard. In your motherboard, clean your ram and also where ram is put. Then restart your system again it will work. When it will not work please change your ram. Then it will work.

Once I have logged on and I am working on one of the various programs the start menu disappears. The only way that I can get the start menu back is to restart the computer and then it disappears again....

This is not a problem with your T40.

This is a configurable options in Windows.

You can program the start menu to disappear and reappear when you bring the mouse in close proximity to the area where your start menu has been configured to appear, either on the bottom, left, right, or top of the desktop and which feature can be reconfigured by left clicking on the initial appearance or a subsequent appearance of the start menu and indicating your preference.
