Vivitar tripod V900 has a broken friction level

The V900 tripod has extending legs that are held by small red friction levers. One of these levers has broken, leaving me unable to extend and tighten that leg. This has been a great tripod and I hate to have to toss it for lack of such a simple part. Thanks.

I have not yet found a fix for this tripod. I did just purchase a digital camera, so I will try to post a picture. I searched for used tripods that I could scavenge for parts, but did not find one on ebay, craigslist, or amazon.

Smileclick - are you not using your tripod because it is broken, or have you just replaced it?

Ok, never used this site before and not sure I know what I am doing. Did you get your tripod fixed? I have the exact same tripod but am no longer using it.

I have replaced it just a few weeks ago with a new heavy duty one as I am getting into the photography thing!! (and might I add loving it!) I was trying to find a price on this one to put it on my company bulletin board and try to sell it. I have no use for it and it is in good shape and all red levers work. If you are interested in it let me know how I can go about getting it to you.

Vivitar has been out of the tripod business for a few years now. They may no longer have the parts. You may be able to find another V900 and scavage the parts. Make sure the model numbers match exactly. The V900SE is a different year and does not share the same parts as the V900.

Is there a Carbon fibre small compact with splitter

Carolyn
-If you are looking for a compact light weight (CF) tripod for video...., that is going to be...., stable & durable (for use with a smaller video camera or a DSLR) & with a mid-level spreader...., I have some bad news for you. They do not exist!!!!!
-You can get a number of tripods that meet some of these requirements..., but not all!!!
-No fear....., it is still possible to get a tripod that is small, light, repairable and with a higher weight capacity and better durability than either of the Manfrotto tripods you mentioned..., but they will not use a mid-level spreader!!!

-Questions for you...., the manfrotto #055CXB has a column that terminates with a flat plate & a 3/8-16" thread. The Manfrotto # MTV502AM tripod has a 75mm bowl mount. Do you use a video head with a flat base or with a 'bowl'?
-If your head has a flat base consider looking at CF tripods from brands such as Sirui (#N2204 or #N3204)..., great value tripod from China..., or products from Gitzo or Really Right Stuff...., (superior products...., and your grandkids will be using them..., but pricey)!!!!
-If your head uses a 75mm bowl mount get the Miller #1501 tripod...., stupidly strong and well supported.

-Bottom line..., with light to mid weight cameras, if you go with a good quality spreaderless tripod that uses 'rotary locks' vs 'quick release' locks...., the leg mechanisms are so superior that you will find that you will get less flex than most tripods with spreaders. They will also be smaller, lighter and allow you to shoot far closer to the ground!!!

Go t a shop that has a good selection of quality tripods and test for leg twist..., you will be converted!!! (note: to test this leg flex..., extend the legs & grab hold of (2) of the tubes near the top 'crown' and then try to move the legs to the left then right...., many will exibit significant flex at the joints!!!!

One of my Tripod legs is bent and I can't pull it out.

You can attempt to bend it back using a table and attempting to lever it.

If this doesn't work you will need to replace the tripod. You can get a decent tripod for around $40.

Leg slips will not lock

Although I'm not familiar with your particular make and model it sounds like a common problem which affects many other tripods. If the legs clamp with a lever action then if you closely examine each clamp as you activate the lever I expect that you'll find a small crack opens up in the clamp assembly.

It's a faulty design as the clamps simply aren't strong enough for the load and eventually crack due to fatigue. Some manufacturers supply replacement leg clamps but they also fail and fitting them usually costs more than the tripod is worth.

Next time, consider buying a tripod which has rotating collars to lock the legs with. They're not as quick to operate as lever action (a.k.a. "quick release") clamps, but they don't take much longer and last far longer. Rotating collar clamps are only suitable for tubular legs, and to be as rigid as extruded profile legs there's usually an increased weight penalty unless you spend far more on carbon fibre versions.

Personally, I tend to buy cheap but perfectly good non brand name lightweight tripods which I can get for £10 including a carry bag and handle and expect to have to replace them when broken: usually about once a year. It's a lot cheaper than spending over £300 on a good one and means I can afford to have a spare one in the car.

ALDI (in the UK and Europe) sell a £10 tripod which comes with a handle, carry bag, pan/tilt head, quick release leg clamps, geared centre column plus two quick release mounting plates and has a bag hook at the bottom of the centre column; it even has a no quibble three year guarantee. It's not a smooth or as well built as many, but can't be beaten at the price.

Can't figure out how to straighten and level the camera

if you have lost a srew or wing nut, it will be loose where there should be one. set it up and then try to raise or move it around in one spot. iof it moves than look for a screw hole. the handle itself sets the rotation try unloosing the handle..

One Leg has loss it's grip.

take it apart, there is a rubber ring like a belt or rubber band, either broken or missing. you will have to find a relacement for that, may have to take apart another leg to have one to compare, course I don't honestly know where you will find that piece. too take it apart just keep spinning the lock counterclockwise until it comes off. good luck.
