Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

Power loss in external harddrive

Hi mjcole,
Couple things. What model WD drive do you have? Plugging the laptop adapter into the drive chassis may have fried the chassis. You can buy a new chassis and put your drive into it, or you can buy a new power supply in case the one you have has gone bad and you did not realize it. Not likely though.

The power requirements are very specific and the laptop power supply may have been to much for the WD drive.

WD ELEMENT DOESNT POWER UP. GREEN AND BLUE LIGHT FLASHES

Have you contacted WDE.. by email,or, phone? Seems like that the hard drive has had its bios info corrupted , due to possibly hooking it up to the pc(in the wrong order), or even, a power surge that you were not aware of... The Manufacturer can send you a link to upgrade/restore the harddrive bios...

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

Western Digital External Hard Drive Won't Boot Up

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.

Did I just fry my WD External?

Hi,

I've done something similiar and I know the feeling, but the good news is that you may not of done the damage you think. Here's what I suggest. Go to this link. Where they will explain the differences of the meanings of the flashing lights. There are so many variables, that it would be to difficult to figure out unless I was actually working on the disk itself. But the page is very easy to understand, and hopefully you'll find what I did, was all I need to do was to power down and up again.

Good Luck!

My harddrive doesnt work anymore...its loads up than loads down...and a red light flashes..help!

Remove it from its casing and put hook the drive up to the computer internally, if the drive works the enclosure is dead and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the drive is dead and needs to be replaced.

Flashing light on WD 500GB External Harddrive

This may sound silly, but sometimes if you put the drive in the freezer overnight it will work long enough for you to retrieve your data.Make sure you are ready to copy the data to another as it will likely fail again once it warms up.
