HP scanjet 4850 problem

My system :
Vista, 32 bit on an HP PAvilion a6150 y
scanning using the SJ 4850 via photoshop cs3 using import>4800 series twain and I recieve this message microsoft windows hpqscnvw has stopped working- a problem caused this program to stop working correctly. Windows will contact you if solution is available. I can scan using the import> wia scan but this will not allow for transparency/film or any advanced adjustments. I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled several times and also downloaded and installed the patch for tablets since I use a Wacom from time to time. Is there a better way to scan? I wouldn't mind dumping all this HP junk file stuff (200 + MB) anyway. It's become a real headache and HP wants a bucket of money to tell me how to fix it. Just seems like an incompatibility issue to me but waht do I know? Thanks for any consideration,
David

this is the same driver that I mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling several times along with the patch for tablets that you see below it. This doesn't help the situation.

  • kcdart210 Jan 02, 2009

    Scott,
Thanks, but I think the usb cable is working properly, otherwise I would not be able to scan using the WIA scan option in Photoshop. As to the drivers, these are the drivers I have downloaded and installed several times. One one occasion it worked once but then would lock up and send the message that I included in this original correspondence. I then have to go to the task manager, shut everything down, and start over. Thus is where I am now.

  • kcdart210 Jan 02, 2009

I am not at the computer with the problem currently, but if you don't mind me asking, what will the difference be in running the program as an administrator rather than through just normal user?

  • kcdart210 Jan 02, 2009

I'm not sure how to go about the registry update. Any info on that would be appreciated.

  • kcdart210 Jan 02, 2009

I'd rather not do system restore. That seems to be be an extreme solution (or not) to this type of problem plus I will never know what cause the problem should I encounter it again. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • kcdart210 Jan 02, 2009

I would have thought this too, but it worked for sometime with this scanner without a hitch but then one day decided not to scan using the twain drivers that support slide/film scanning through photoshop. The scanner is only four years old and an HP at that, the same as the system that it's running from, which is a little over two years old now.

  • kcdart210 Jan 03, 2009

I am beginning to think that I am experiencing a conflict between the scanner software and the wacom tablet software. Even though HP offers a patch for this to supposedly solve the problem, it doesn't seem to work for me. I just can't seem to figure this out and have already tried most of the suggestions I've seen here. I do appreciate input though.

  • kcdart210 Jan 03, 2009

so is silver fast a scanning program that runs independently, thus working with any scanner?

  • kcdart210 Jan 04, 2009

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I will give some of these a try and hopefully find success.

Sir,

It's a waste of time to run the scanner from Photoshop. Photoshop requires too much of the computer's resources. Epson (and Silverfast) scanning software should be run as a stand-alone program.

Let me explain. Photoshop uses most of the computer's resources. Scanning uses most of the computer's resources. Together, there is a crunch and compromises have to be made. If you scan from within Photoshop, and photoshop runs out of memory, it will crash and you will lose your work to that point. It probably won't happen with onsey-twosey scans, at least not at once. If you batch scan, or repeatedly scan and save, Photoshop, being a leaky product (with respect to memory), will eventually crash.

If you use the scanning program as a stand-alone, each image is saved as a file as soon as the scan is complete. If the program crashes (which is rare), you lose only the work in progress. The stand-alone scans can be much faster than used as a plugin, because there is more available RAM and virtual memory.

This is problem with virtual memory and ram. Min. 4GB ram is better to work with photoshop. How to increase virtual memory click this link for help

thanks
good luck

  • hi

it is the same issue of my laptop...If a program is not responding, it means the program is interacting more slowly than usual with Windows, typically because a problem has occurred in the program. If the problem is temporary, and if you choose to wait, some programs will start responding again. Depending on the options available, you can also choose to close or restart the program. When you close a program that has stopped responding, all files or documents that you've opened using the program are closed, not just the one that you're viewing when the problem occurs. Some programs might try to save your information, but it depends on the program that you're using. To help prevent information loss, save your work frequently first if you want to stop the program not responding type ctRL+shift+esc .try scaning virus..if any remove virus and update your latest scanjet software..check windows defender blocking program this is the best solution.if not works reply me.......

    • Some problems and solutions can only be viewed and fixed by an administrator. Log on using an administrator account to view these problems.

  • Run antispyware programs on a regular basis. You can scan your computer for spyware with Windows Defender, or you can use a different antispyware program. For more information, see Scan for spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
If you are unfamiliar with spyware removal and would like to learn more, see Turn Windows Defender on or off and Remove spyware from your computer.

  • Update your antivirus software. Installing an antivirus program and keeping it up to date can help defend your computer against viruses. Antivirus programs scan for viruses trying to get into your e‑mail, operating system, or files. New viruses appear daily, so check the antivirus manufacturer's website frequently for updates. Most antivirus programs are sold with annual subscriptions, which can be renewed as needed. To see a list of antivirus software manufacturers, go to the Microsoft Antivirus Partners webpage

David,
It seems like the traditional driver steps have already been tried. I believe you are right when you think it is a compatibility problem.

Here is a solution that does not have anything to do with the driver and may solve the problem.

According to your original problem statement, I get the impression this scanner used to work with no problems. If that is correct, you should be able to use the System Restore function to go back to when the scanner worked properly.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

Follow the prompts and select a bold date prior to when your problem first appeared. The system will reboot and with luck, the scanner will work.

If you find that some piece of software you had installed is now not available, you may have to re-install it. Use caution re-installing as it is possible that something you installed caused the incompatibility.

If the System Restore does not do the job, you should be able to reload the O/S back to what it was like when you bought it. That choice is a bit more extreme, but very likely to resolve your problem.

If you reload the O/S, please back up any data you have added to the computer since you bought it. Otherwise it will be gone.

Actually, System Restore is not extreme in the least. Reloading the O/S is extreme.

System restore uses back up copies of the registry that Windows creates whenever new software or hardware is installed. I have never seen it cause any harm and if it does not solve the problem, System Restore also gives the option to Undo the restore putting you exactly where you are now. It is one of the safest options I have ever used for troubleshooting and I have used it a *lot*.

It appears you have tried a lot of other options and this one just might get you back to working.

I own a HP Scanjet 4850. Please give me information on free driver software. I want to connect my scanner to my laptop, Windows 7. I want to scan photos and save them to a cd. Thanks...

On this link you will get the official driver for your scanner for Windows 7 (32 bit). Download it, run it and follow the on screen guide. This is just about the drivers. About software, you can use any image editor software you like, at the programs - accesories is already the Microsoft Paint. You can also try Gimp from this link. It's a freeware remarkable editor. The procedure more or less is the same: start the program and go to "file" - "import from scanner". Follow the on screen steps.

- reboot
- try if scanner works - sometimes they do already
- if not head over to System management or system control what it's called in english
- choose add device and choose scanner
- now Windows tries to install a xerox-driver - allow this
- reboot
- and now it should work - if not sue hp! (But buttons for direct printing etc. might not be working anymore - except via the software itself - no more via the buttons

Hope I could help

This might be a hardware problem, but it could also be caused by an outdated (or corrupted) driver; you could uninstall the original driver, then download and install the newest version directly from HP here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&product=446435&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

If that link is broken, or doesn't work for you, use this one:

http://tinyurl.com/2n7lge

Also, I've copied the following information directly from the HP 4850 Scanjet user's manual:

If you have the HP Image Zone software installed, you can use the onscreen Help to solve other problems with the scanner. To gain access to the Help, open HP Solution Center, click Help, and then click HP Scanjet 4800 series scanner Help. The Help system provides information about the HP Scanjet 4800 series scanner hardware as well as information about the HP Image Zone and HP Scanning software itself. Also, see Scan troubleshooting in the general Troubleshooting and support section of the Help.

Good luck with this; let us know what you learn...
