When I back off the down limit it doesn't close the door. It stops about an inch from closing. Thanks for answering though.

You seem to have turned the down limit too far. Sometimes they are very sensitive. Also, your "j" arm (the arm that connets the operator to the door) should be almost vertical when the door is in the down position and the curve part of the "j" should be monted about 2" below the top support (strut) on the door.

Check the track rollers. Lube if dry.
Check the trolley, lube as needed.
Check the long lead screw the trolley follows, lube as needed with lube for that type of opener. If it is in the motor housing, is it time for a new opener?

I had an opener that drifted in adjustment, that would go beyond the closed position a little causing the rail to bow upwards a little once closed, putting strain on the gearing shaft bearings and wore them out. I was able to order a package with the pinion gear, drive gear and sprocket and bushings, including the pulley for the opposing end in one kit.

Cautions...
-Disengage the trolley from the belt, chain or lead screw.
-Unplug the power before opening any opener covers and servicing anything inside the unit.
-Readjust the open and close travel positions

Door comes down and goes right back up. then the lite blinks 4 times with a click noise. the safety eyes also are not on

It sounds like you need to adjust your down limit switch and/or perhaps your motor force settings. If the limit switch is not in the sweet spot along the rail it can be triggering too soon or not in time. In your case it could be too far down the rail and thus not stopping/slowing the motor in time. Your door is then being pushed against the floor too hard. Your safety/return force is goes way over limit and tells the opener to go back. While closing your door look at your rail and if its bending when the door hits the ground, this is definitely happening. After finding the sweet spot for your down limit switch, you can readjust your return/safety force per your opener manual.

I just installed a new 'rack' to my Craftsman Garage door opener on the screw drive rail system. It now goes up and won't go down. How do I adjust the up / down limits to get it going?

You will need to release the door from the opener and then open the door manually and make a mark on the t-rail where the trolley is. Then remove the t-rail from the motor unit and manually run the rack to the mark on the t-rail. Now run the motor until it runs and stops in the up position. Reassemble all the pieces. This will get everything back into sync.

YOU MAY NEED TO GET THE SPRING ON THE DOOR ADJUSTED.

WHEN AN OPENER IS INSTALLED THE SPRING SHOULD BE SET A LITTLE HEAVY. YOU WANT THE DOOR TO SLOWLY DRIFT CLOSED IF LEFT HALFWAY UP.

IT SOUNDS LIKE EITHER YOUR SPRING NEEDS ADJUSTMENT OR THE DOOR BINDS AT THE BOTTOM - HOW DOES IT WORK MANUALLY??

IF YOU CAN'T CLOSE IT WITH 3 FINGERS THE OPENER WILL HAVE TROUBLE.

YES THE CRAFTSMAN RAIL IS WEAK MAKING IT THAT MUCH MORE CRITICAL TO SET THE HEIGHT PER INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKE SURE THE DOOR WORKS EASILY,

HOPE THIS HELPS

Bottom rail fit on 1500D door in 28" shower stall...

Mark, I'm having different problems with the same door. Try "filing" down the ends of the bottom rail, where it is contacting the curved corners. You might have to buy a metal file to accomplish this. Go heavy on the adhesive caulk on the underside of the bottom rail. Make sure the shower base is clean and dry. You might have to push down with your arms for several minutes to get the adhesive caulk to stick. Good luck, I have to go back to my folks this afternoon, because I can't get the door panel in w/o it scraping the top rail. Ugh.
