Question about Symphonic SC3813 13 in. TV/VCR Combo

1 Answer

Channel scanning fails to stop at 3.

I don't have the manual. Am trying to install Digital to Analog Converter, but can't begin programming process because the TV's channel scanner won't stop at 3. It's first stop is at 7, our primary local channel. I don't see a manual way of setting it at 3.

Mintek DTV-260

The Mintek DTV-260 only has a NTSC (analog) tuner. You will need to connect your RCA antenna to a digital to analog converter box to watch TV over the air. Then connect the output of the converter box to your TV.

The common converter boxes are limited to SD output. You might be able to find an HD converter box online. (With the standard converter box, the available outputs are coaxial and composite video.) The DTV-260 has a composite video port; alternatively set the TV to channel 3 or 4 and use the coaxial (RF) input on the TV.

There may be a low-power station that still broadcasts in analog. However these are rare. You will need to switch from CATV to OTA (Air) to check for one of these stations. Analog Cable has different parameters than scanning for over the air signals.

I hope this helps.

The program light blinks all the time. I do not have a remote. I have a convertor box on the tv and an antanna but I keep getting a message saying to check antanna and connections, no sinal. I get a few...

I'm assuming you are getting more than two digital channels into the converter so the problem lies in how the converter is connected to the TV, which I presume is via a coaxial cable, right and you have the TV tuned to analog channel 3 or 4, right?

If that is all true, the RF coax cable solution is not going to work. The few channels you were getting, either side of 3 or 4 is just RF bleed.

Try this, acquire somehow a A/V hookup cable that has 3 RCA male jacks on each end. One cable will have YELLOW ends, This is composite VIDEO. There will be two others colored RED and WHITE (or perhaps black). This is for the AUDIO. The outputs on the converter and the inputs should be colored the same way. Hook the two up, noting which INPUT (1, 2 or 3) on the TV you have plugged into. Not sure of the exact number your TV has. Make sure you change the TV to INPUT whatever. You may also have to re-scan your converter. As long as your antenna is connected correctly gto the converter you should gain a lot more channels. Let me know how you make out.

I plugged in the tv and i only have fuzz is there a way to do a channel scan

If the set is more than a couple of years old it's won't have digital tuning, so without a DTV converter box the fuzz is all you're going to get. It won't be able to pick up any TV signals on its own now that conventional analog broadcasts have ended. You'll need to get a converter (and possibly a new antenna as well), hook it to the TV and follow the setup and channel scan instructions it comes with.

If the set is new enough that it has a digital tuner already built-in, use the TV's setup menu to verify the thing is properly set for digital broadcasts and scan for channels. The on-screen displays generally make the steps clear what buttons you need to press to start the scan. This is assuming you have the remote control available or that there is a front-panel menu button on your set. If you've lost your remote, there may be no way to get into the setup without it.

You can probably find a manual for your model online at Sharp's website. If you'll post a followup comment with the complete model number, I'll see if I can provide any more information for you.

Digital TV Converter Box

I have a Panasonic TV with built-in VCR, I had Comcast put in a converter box and was given instructions on how to set up the system to record my wife's programs, I had to select the program (in advance of scheduled time) to be recorded through the TV & converter box to the VCR. Next styep- select "Show" and I received a menu the first of which was "R" I clicked the "R" and a menu for selecting Repeat record start/stop times appeared Click OK and was then directed to to set up the VCR according to Panasonic VCR instructions. Worked for a day then the "R" menu on the converter box disappeared. Both the VCR and TV had to be set to Ch 3 to get it to work, But that's history. When it quit working ("R" menu), I had Comcast come get their box . PS The tech who showed up to pick up the converter box knew nothing about any "R" (record) menus except on the most ecpensive converter box. That cinched my decision, Oh Wel!. Sign me Tom with less trash to watch.

I need to leave my TV on channel 3 and set the converter to the channel I want to record. When programming for future recording, it's always from channel 3, not the channel I want the converter displaying.

Digital tuner

I don't have this unit, but guessing from it's description on Amazon.com, I'd figure that it is analog-only. So you would need a converter.

Here's the thing: all U.S. broadcasters are transmitting the new DTV signals NOW - in addition to the old analog signals. If a TV has a digital tuner, you should be able to use it now to see those DTV signals. Check your setup menu for options like ATSC.
One hint, the new signals use channel designations like 7.1 or 7-1 or 7-1HD. And some stations will have virtual channels, i.e., 7.1, 7.2, 7.3. If you can't get your TV to scan channels and show the numbers in that fashion, it isn't using a digital tuner.
