Every time I close the lid of my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop and reopen it, the screen goesblack, and the system crashes. Toggling Fn+F8 doesn't help. A restart is then required. Uponrestarting, the screen resolution is wrong, and I need to reset theresolution. Under control panel / power options / advanced, I have set ''when Iclose the lid'' option to ''Do Nothing'', and still the problem persists.

boot the computer in safemode. check if it will still lock up. if it does then run a hardware diagnostic test. if it doesnt clear the startup by opening the system configuration utility then disabling the items under the startup tab then rebooting to normal mode. regarding the computer not going to sleep mode when closing the lid, visit the power options in control panel and check the settings on what the computer does when you close the lid.
Known issue. The windows default settings for power saving mode tell the computer to switch it off (sleep) when the lid is closed. The sleep mode doesn't turn completely the computer, just the visualization devices (mainly screen, also some other components not required for the computer). What I would advise you to do after restarting the computer (press on the power button for a very long time, until you cannot hear it working), is to change the power settings. go to control panel, choose "power options", then see if you have "choose what closing the lid does". If it's not there (not all laptops show this option), choose "change when the computer sleeps", then change " put the computer to sleep" to "never".
That should do it. if you have any questions feel free to ask me.
Your laptop either goes to hibernate or sleep mode when you close the lid. Then, when you open the lid up, the screen is still off because your pc already hanged/froze and could not wake up at all (usual problem in vista). Off course, hard shutdown would fix it. But actual fix is under power options on your control panel. Check your current scheme and edit it. There are options there that you can select to "do nothing when closing the lid"
you try pressing the power button once? or maybe even pressing any keys.
also try adjusting your power management
vista) start. control panel. power option. Edit plan settings.
xp) right click anywhere. properties. screen saver tab. power management.
sure mam .. just check out the settings for "what closing the lid does" option which appears when you click on "more power option" that appears when you single click the battery icon in the icon notication area in the taskbar... put that setting to do nothing
