I need to know the polarity for the plug on the output of the ac adaptor for my daughters HP Pavilion dv6500

The power supply we have does not have a cable that removes from the module with a plug on both ends, it is soldered inside the module and has a plug on the end of the cable that fits the computers ac adapter jack. I have the plug that was cut off and can reattach it, all i need to know is the tip or ring polarity of the plug.

its a barrel connector (coaxial) which has two connections, one is the center and the other the outer barrel, all i need to know is which is + and which is -

Thanks for the help, i took the laptop apart and traced the wiring to find out the polarity, now it's working fine again.

The cables for these are fairly specific, but if you have a cbale that has the same plugs and fits both the transformer side and the computer side, you cna use that as a replacement. The cord itself has no polarity.
Are you looking to do something else here?

Okay, they use two different connectors on this series. Is it a barrel connector or one with three sockets?

The HP DV6500 uses a power supply with a positive tip. I have an HP supply here which has HP PartNo: 380467-005. It says replace with HP Spare: 381090-001. Input 100-24V ~ 1.5A 50-60Hz. Output: 18.5V 3.5A. Positive tip.

I need to know the POLARITY of the AC adaptor to provide the correct setting using a universal adapter.

there is no polarity in ac current as ac means alternating current and that means alternating between positive to negative back to positive back to negative and so on
only dc ( direct current ) and the center pin of the plug is designated as the positive pole has polarity, the outer case being the negative
OR Are you asking the voltage of the ac adapter and the voltage of the dc output side of the adapter

Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB

first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!

I have a HP dv7 laptop it does not work with the ac adapter but worked with the battery, whenever it is working with the battery and the ac adapter is connected it shuts down.

Remove the battery and plug the ac adaptor in check wethere the light on the port where you connect the ac adaptor glows or not, if no then check the wethere the ac adaptor is getting warm or not after you plug it in for few minutes if not then ac adaptor has to be replaced.
If the light on the port is glowing then it is likely that the power supply of the notebook has gone bad as it is not able to switch to ac adaptor or the port where you connect the ac adaptor to the notebook has a short circut when the acadaptor pin is connected , better try with a different ac adaptor to be sure wethere the issue is with ac adaptor or the notebook.
My best wishes

I lost my GE Ultrasonic 2.1 Speaker power adapter and i need need ones but i dont know what to buy, the voltage it requires..6 or 9 volts?

at most electrical stores you can buy a universal power adaptors with a selection of socents to fit most connections. and which has a selector on it for various voltages settings.
take one of the little connectors and see which one fits. then checking the polarity on your device set the polarity the same when plugging the connector into the power supply cable. adjust voltage as needed.

Warning: when connecting a variable power adaptor alway connect on the lowest voltage setting and work up as too high voltage can distroy your appliance.

Ac adapter

If I understand your description correctly, you have two TVs that use the same model adapter, and both adapters have failed. In that case, I would suspect a weak design, or you may have put them in some place where they were overheated or zapped by power line surges. If it appears to be a design problem, you may want to consider using a substitute.

The adapter should have the output voltage and current marked on it, for example, 12VDC 2300mA would be a 12 Volt, 2.3 Amp output. The polarity is usually marked with a diagram showing whether the center in or hole in the plug is positive or negative.

You can use an adapter with the same voltage and plug style (including polarity) and the same or greater current output. If you find one with the right voltage and current, but the wrong plug, you may be able to change the plug. Just be absolutely certain you have the wires going to the correct terminals; reversing the polarity could damage or destroy your TV. Do a proper solder job on it; simply stripping the wires and twisting them on will not be reliable.

Sources for adapters include www.jameco.com and www.mouser.com.

I can't determine the polarity of my GPX PDL705 portable dvd

Hi,

I have uploaded the GPX PDL705 manual to this site today. If you check tomorrow they may have posted it by then.

If you look at the small print on the adaptor it should indicate by diagram Voltage output, current capacity, type and tip polarity by small diagram. Most adaptors are 'positive' -- but if you are unsure do not plug the adaptor into the device because it will fry it!
