My washing machine won't agitate and it's making a grinding noise

The machine is filled but it won't agitate and is making a grinding noise. What do I need to do to fix this? Is it cheaper to buy a new machine or have it serviced?

If its direct drive ( no belts ) there is a plastic coupler that joins the motor to the transmission that shears off when the machine has been overloaded. lay machine on its side look from underneath and look for small plastic pieces on the floor and if so you need to replace the coupler this has happen to us alot of times and we have fixed it ourselves . hope this helps

if its belt drive and the belt is intack, then you probably have a problem with the transmission , hard to say without seeing , but if the transmission is bad then you may need to buy a new machine or spend the money for a repair man to estimate it. its up to you

how old is it? go from there

Whirlpool washer WTW5510VQO will fill, spin and drian but won't agitate, just makes a clicking noise.

If this is just clicking then the agitator bearings stuck or something is jamming it.

Grinding noise when it goes to agitate or spin.

gramps Most likely the problem with your washer is worn out motor drive coupling. You can buy it here: http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=SrmyP8LkIos&offerid=92089.547094027&type=10&subid= If you need help to replace it, let me know. Gendos...post back

Grinding niose from agitator.

If the fill and drain functions correctly, AND the spin cycle works correctly, AND the cycle itself starts and completes correctly, the problem being that the back and forth motion of the agitator starts the loud grinding noise, it will likley be broken gears in the transmission. The single most expensive part in the washing machine.
