Question about Mitsubishi WS-55809 55" Rear Projection Television

Picture is curved whe you turn on the tv.

When you turn on the tv the picture curved distorting the picture in shape and focus. For now after a few minutes the picture corrects and is fine. The problem seems to be getting worse in how the the picture corrects itself.

It has an hourglass shape when first turned on but

Your TV set has trouble in its "pincushion correction" circuitry, which corrects distortion so the picture is straight on the screen. Unfortunately, it's not possible to pin the trouble down to a specific part without having the set for troubleshooting. Since the trouble clears up after the set's on for a time, it's probably due to a faulty capacitor or intermittent solder connections. Because of the troubleshooting skills and tools needed, you should let a professional service shop handle the repair. This kind of problem is relatively inexpensive to repair (at least parts-wise; I've been out of the repair business for a while now, and have no idea what kind of labor prices shops are charging) and would not cost nearly as much as a replacement TV.

Double and curved image on blue warm-up screen

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...
